The first big competition in the college calendar is the Oracle Masters. This will take place 21-24 September at Pepperdine University / Malibu Racquets Club. One man and one woman is selected from each Div 1 conference and the event consists of a 32 man / woman singles draw and a 32 mixed dubs draw. This event has only been running a couple of years and I'm not sure how the players are selected. Anyway the competitors list has just been released and although we have no women we do have a couple of the guys:
Jack Molloy - California - At large selection (i.e. organisers pick)
Last year we had Cameron breaking on the scene which was exciting.
And the year before that there was Lloyd.
We don't have a 'star' player this summer but it seems to me that our college players, in particular Julian Cash, Andrew Watson and Ryan Peniston, have been way more successful than our usual batch of college players who do some tournaments over the summer.
Just to highlight:
Our 'best' college player, Julian Cash, was unranked at the start of summer and is now 992
Ryan Peniston was unranked at the start of the summer and will be up to about 1040 in a week's time.
Andy Watson was 1675 and will be at about 1090 in a week's time.
(It's true that the unranked two were ranked previously but they've all blasted through their previous CHs). And, of course, a lot of others have got into the rankings this summer.
NB Julian is playing the 15k in the US this week; Ryan is down for Roehampton but seemingly Andy W hasn't stayed on in Canada. So maybe more rises ???
Isn't Thomas Wright a freshman at Arizona State this their first year with a programme?
Yes and no!! He went over in January last year (as did a few others I believe) so they could get a core of a team training together in advance of their first season so technically he is a sophomore (and shown as such) but this is the first year he will compete.
So that would make him a redshirt freshman, very common in football where players (often QB's) train for a year to learn the playbook and still retain 4 years of eligibility. You grey shirt if you are injured.
