Not to be - George narrowly misses out on becoming only the third Brit to make a junior slam quarter-final in his antepenultimate junior year this century (something achieved by Andy Murray and Kyle Edmund at the US Open)

R3

Danny Thomas (USA) d. (Q) George Loffhagen 6-1 7-6(5)

That result seems fair, really, given the overall match.

But glad that George at least played a very competitive second set. It's been a very good tournament, at a really important one too, and he'll be up towards the top 50 in the rankings.

Good to see how generally competitive George was with the 17 yo ( 18 in November ) JWR 32 (CH 22) even in the first set after these first three games.

I sense from what has been said before and a match like this that George has maybe a good temperament for putting things behind him.

"Hey not a great start, but whatever, let's move on ..."

The young man certainly seems to be heading in a very good direction.

Liking "antepenultimate". I trust it's been run by SC

PS : indeed a proper word with definitions all over the place that had managed to bypass me until now. You never stop learning ...

Girls Doubles:

R2 (L16) Emily APPLETON (GBR) / Emiliana ARANGO (COL) [6] def. Viktoriia DEMA (UKR) / Mihaela Lorena MARCULESCU (ROU) 6-2 6-0

(yep, Indy, 'antepenultimate' hadn't flashed up on my radar until now, either, but it runs off the tongue nicely and makes sense so that's one to add to the box)

Just to note that the lad who beat Aidan in R1 6-4 in the third has made the quarters. One of two Americans in the last 8.

Simon Carr from Ireland lost in three sets, in R3, however.

Argentina also have two lads in the last 8. And one girl. (With Del Po and Schwartzman, too, they're having a very nice event)

The girl who beat Em is also in the last 8. As well as 13 year-old Coco.

No, Katie Swan made the Aussie Final in 2015.
