RE: Weeks 35 & 36: US Open, New York (hard) - mixed doubles

Revenge duly extracted, though I'm not sure how, much consolation it will be:

SF:  (1) Martina Hingis (SUI) & Jamie Murray CR 11 (5+6) defeated CoCo Vandeweghe & Horia Tecau (USA/ROU) CR 64 (37+27) by 6-4 7-6(8)

At least they did the business in straight sets this time, though they were pushed close in one or two of their service games & were actually broken to 30 in the eighth game of the second set, surrendering a one-break lead, then made heavy wether of the TB.

*****

Final:  (1) Martina Hingis (SUI) & Jamie Murray CR 11 (5+6) vs (3) Chan Hao-Ching & Michael Venus (TPE/NZL) CR 24 (12+12)

Martina can be quite poor on her serve - Jamie really does carry her at times.

Yes but she's got such great court sense and hands that it more than makes up for it, and probably a better forehand.

Besides, the man is the stronger partner in mixed. That's the nature of the beast.

I haven't seen much at all of their mixed here and not their latter rounds. Mixed is not really my bag and I generally wouldn't comment in this thread.

But the little bit I did see earlier I was actually relatively impressed by Martina's serve. Seemed to have decent pace and accuracy. Maybe I didn't come across a typical sample.

Jamie's a again, though not until after he & the Swiss Miss revert to the form of the earlier rounds:

Final:  (1) Martina Hingis (SUI) & Jamie Murray CR 11 (5+6) defeated (3) Chan Hao-Ching & Michael Venus (TPE/NZL) CR 24 (12+12) by 6-1 4-6 [10-8]

I watched the match right through. Jamie was the nervy one in the latter stages - dropped his serve at the end of the second set. Martina played very well, considering Venus spent a large part of the match trying to smash the cover of the ball.

What a fantastic achievement, you have to be so consistent to win back to back major championships, the quality of doubles players on both side of the net being about as good as you can get and the margins so fine, definitely no accident.
