why are the Mixed Doubles having to play MTBs? - it's not as if they're behind schedule and the other doubles matches are 3 proper sets

A bit pathetic, I agree, but mixed doubles has had MTBs at the US Open for at least 10 years

They did struggle indeed. I watched the MTB and it was nervy. Peschke hit an incredible lob over Martina and then in the next point somehow hit an equally amazing return. They went 5-2 up (I think) and I thought it was all over. Not to be, thankfully!
