Finally made it home after a long day and been celebrating all the way from these two excellent wins.
Looks like when Cam came through a highly competitive 1st set, it knocked the stuffing out of Tursunov. Retirement or not, this is a terrific result and fully deserved. I do think that Busta will have too much for Cam in R2 but in a two horse race anything can happen. Busta, as I have mentioned before, has followed a very similar ranking path to Kyle, racing up to around 50, pausing for a couple of seasons, before pushing on again, which I am confident Kyle will also do in time. I think in his case you could put that down to adapting to different surfaces. His clay court prowess took him to 50ish, but it took a while to transform his game into on more suited to hard court in particular. Over the last 18 months or so, he has pushed on again and is now in the top 20 and on an upward trajectory. I think that from the deuce court, you will see him serve a lot out wide to Cam's backhand and it will be interesting to see how Cam copes with that. But whatever happens, what a fantastic experience and achievement this has been for Cam so far. A few weeks back he was scrambling for enough points to gain entry into qualies and now here he is in R2 of the main draw. Well done Cam, and nothing to lose from here on.
When I saw Kyle's draw against Haase, I feared the worst. Haase is a wily old fox who is the sort of player who could work out Kyle quite quickly and nullify his game. Add this to the fatigue factor of 7 games in 7 days last week and I had Haase down as favourite. However, it seems like everything was ticking for Kyle today and to win in straight sets is an added bonus from a stamina perspective. The match up against Johnson is an interesting one given their encounter last week. I make Kyle a slight favourite in this one but there won't be a lot in it. They will both have learned from last week's match. Much may depend on the Johnson serve. In the first set last week he served his socks off, but once they got into the rally, Kyle definitely had the edge. Too close to call in many ways, but Kyle to just get over the line.
Great to see Kyle come through in straight sets. I did reckon it was a good cumulative first two rounds draw for Kyle, but with the slight worry of yes playing Haase straight off on Monday having played on seven days in a row from Saturday through to Friday and I thought looking jaded in his last match.
Maybe as some suggested he was to an extent not really pushing the boat out, particularly in the final set, against Dzumhur, so adding to that 'not really on it' impression and / or he has enjoyed a very good recovery two days.
And super to see Cam with a MD win too, however it came about. You've got to be in it to win it and Cam got in it by winning three qualifying matches.
I imagine that'll have done Cam's ranking a power of good!
Should take him back into the 180s somewhere.
Yes, looks a good chance that he will take out his recent CH 187 of 07/08, achieved after his recent challenger successes but then before 65 points came off from his Aptos RU spot from last year. Now with 70 points ( so far ) here he has more than added that back on.
Well done boys fabulous makes up for Hev and Joko hitting the buffers. Great to see Kyle win in 3 hopefully he will have a bit of puff left for round 2!
Kyle has largely survived the points drop off from his performance last year thanks to his efforts last week and this (so far). Despite the fact he is still 40 points down over the 2 weeks, (180 coming off but 95+45 going on), he is still currently at 47 in the live rankings. A win over Johnson might see him move up 2 more places, but with Karlovic and Aljaz still to play R1, that could change. In terms of those below him, only Ryan Harrison could overtake him with a win in R1. Three others could surpass him with 2 wins, (Struff, Troicki and Rublev) but anyone else would need to reach the L16 at least.
Harrison will have to beat Berdych, Struff plays Dolgopolov and then the winner of the Berdych/Harrison match, whilst Rublev plays Aljaz. Troicki seems to have the best chance of proceeding, playing Gombos and then most likely Fognini.

Impressed by Kyle's clinical display yesterday, only dropped his serve once throughout and a good mixture of fearhands and net approaches. Equally impressive, I felt, was his assertiveness - when he challenged an out call successfully, the umpire dictated to replay the point only to be told by Kyle "I'm not having that, he half-volleyed the ball, it didn't make any difference, get the umpire out here!".
He then went on to tell a pushy American fan at the end to "chill out" when being told to go and see to his English fans (including me) who were at court side ready for selfies and autographs!
Glad I picked the right match to watch!
Not there today but back tomorrow although will have to leave by about 3pm US time so hope they put Kyle and/or Cam on early.
Cameron has a chance against the spaniard, important to remember, the majority of Spanish rankings are false (excluding Nadal), the spanish players tend to play 50 atp 250's a year and end up in the top 25. If they just played 18 tourns like most people, they would be ranked 40-60.

Great to hear first hand reports. Thanks for that Priesty. Hope you get to see some more GB action tomorrow.
Interesting to note that Leon described this as one of Kyle's best matches, so you weren't the only person who was impressed.
