Yes, I don't know why their rules don't have the #3 seed moving into a withdrawn #1 or #2 seed's position. It is potentially ( or will be seen to be ) a much bigger issue than the moves they do make. But as I said it does seem to have been just as Wimbledon 2009 though at least there the #3 seed was in the 'right' half.

Basically then Federer would have gone into Murray's place and Cilic into Federer's rather than Murray's place.

Yes, I know it has been the same for years, but you'd have thought 2009 would have made them think 'we dodged a bullet there, must sort it out before it happens again', yet 8 years later, they haven't changed anything.

Shocking OoP for those who are going - 3 out of 5 Brits (and all of those accessible with a ground pass) all due to start first thing on Monday - not even all on 2nd or 3rd, which would at least give some potential overlap on each end.

So will you choose to watch Hev, Kyle or Cam?

The question is is it to be Kyle or Cam or Heather ?

Edit : ah, as Steven already asked. Clearly your public want to know.

Much as Andy dropping out is disappointing, I agree with those that welcome it. I hope he takes the rest of the season out, why not, playing Beijing, Shanghai, Basle/Vienna and Paris (likely schedule) isnt going to change his career and best to be fit and healthy for Aus Open. Plus isnt Kim due to give birth in November, just enjoy the family time is my advise.

But...the bottom half is so open now, ready for someone to come through and make a name for themselves.

I get the impression that Andy's actually been getting relatively good draws for months now, just when he's been least able to take advantage of them.

No doubt when he's fit and well again the draw gods will then pay him back.

Yes, in truth I am aware that random draws are just that ( unless US Open draws for top seeds allegedly ) so have no memory.

See Andy Murray thread Indiana, exactly as I called it (from a very good source).

I'm already looking forward to the Aus Open next year good chance I might be there again for the 3rd time. I ll be at Flushing Meadows next year to complete the set. Aus Open is the best Slam for all round spectators and players even if not most highly regarded.

Truth be told this has been the poorest men's tennis year since the Hewitt/Roddick/Safin era. All Slams anti climax events. Here's hoping to better next year.

For Brits Challenger wise Norrie and Broady have came through and Kyle remains top at that level. Jay and Ryan will hopefully join them next year.

I fancy Cam to go furthest out of our remaining men now.

Man, you keep going on about this source that Andy definitely wasn't playing. But clearly it wasn't that definite unless Andy was totally stringing us all along and everyone involved in the US Open.

I think most folk would have called him ages ago as probably not going to play without any source.

I was trying to just let you have your 'moment of glory' so let it pass in the 'Battle for the top' thread, but given your repetition ...

Extracts from Barry Flatman's report in The Sunday Times:

Unfortunately, I wont be playing here this year, said Murray, his voice cracking with emotion. I did pretty much everything that I could to get myself ready here. I obviously spoke to a lot of hip specialists and tried resting, rehabbing, to try and get myself ready.

In the last few days I was actually practising OK but its too sore for me to win the tournament and ultimately thats what I was here to try and do. In the end I ran out of time.

Murray had been presented with the most favourable of draws for the first week of the tournament and if fully fit, he would most certainly have liked his chances to reach the 11th Grand Slam final of his career.

I certainly wouldnt have been hurting myself more by trying to play, he said. It was more a question of whether the hip would settle down in time.

We were hoping that by taking a few weeks off, resting, rehabbing and really reducing the load that I was putting through it, that I would be OK by the time the US Open came around. Unfortunately thats not been the case.

------

Now Murray must make the decision whether to turn his back on defending titles in Beijing, Shanghai, Vienna, Paris and the Nitto ATP World Tour Finals at Londons 02 Arena.

Resting his hip for the remainder of the year will obviously have ranking connotations and he could drop down to the lower reaches of the top 10.

I have never had to take any time off because of my hip before, Murray continued. Obviously I spoke to a number of specialists about the injury to get the best advice possible. When you speak to a lot, there is different views and opinions on what the best thing to do is moving forward. Thats a decision Ill need to take now.

Current world No 9 Kei Nishikori is another leading player who has decided to call a halt for the rest of the year because of a right wrist injury and Murray vowed to decide in the next few days whether to follow suit.

Ill definitely make a decision in the next few days, said Murray.

Its something that Ill sit down and decide with my team. Ill need to make the correct decision and really think it through these next couple of days.

I want to be back on court as soon as I can. If it means I can play before the end of the year, then thats what I would love to do. I miss competing, and Ill try to get myself back on court as soon as I can.

Hugely disappointing, but the right decision, I feel. cry  It really wasn't worth jeopardising the remainder of  his career.

Whilst I hope he properly rests I also hope he can still go ahead with Andy Murray live (charity event) in Nov which is surely more of a laugh than proper matches?

How far down will he drop if he doesn't play the rest of the year? Mid-teens?

Flatman in one of the extracts I quoted above suggests "the lower reaches of the top 10".

I think that if we want the stars to carry on into their thirties, that this will be the new pattern. The human body is just not built for the punishment that our top tennis players have to give it these days.

As for Andy, I hope he takes the time he needs to mend well and come back strong. My worry is that he will take ages to get back again (it was a year or so after his back injury time off). But I'd rather see abit of him for a long time being competitive for slams than alot of him just in the top 10/20. From what he's said he feels the same.

Oh, that doesn't seem so bad. It will be what it will be regardless. I think Stan was projected to be around 11-13, Novak 13-15 and Kei in the high 20's by the time the Australian Open starts in Jan.
