I know we are now halfway through R2 but I did mention that I had been tabulating the ages of the 64 players through to R2 and the results are :
18 & 19 : 3 ( Shapovalov, Fritz and Rublev ) 20 to 23 : 9 ( includes two 22 yos - Cam and Kyle ) 24 to 27 : 13 28 to 31: 23 32 to 35 : 15 ( includes four 35 yos ) 36 : 1 ( Federer )
The 24 to 27s had a pretty late relative surge but still just over the total 23 and under, just over half of these 28 to 31 and less than these 32 to 35.
For info the year to years splits from 18 to 36 were : 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 4, 4, 9, 6, 3, 5, 4, 5, 2, 4, 1
The 9 is for age 28, which was the median age. 34 were aged 28 or less, 30 aged 29 or more.

Well done, Kyle - not only winning, but winning convincingly.
And Cam was never really going to win (once I'd got the draw sorted out!) but what a week he's had.....given what a short time he's been out of college, that's impressive (and I still can't get my head round his forehand and all the extraneous action that goes on with it, but the result is certainly pretty good so I'll learn to love it).
And very pleased to see the youngsters doing well - thanks Indy for all the info - if there's has to be a gap at the top due to withdrawals, it's nice to see the Next-Gen taking advantage and planting their marker (Tsonga only turns up for the cheque now, I feel, Shapo was a shoe-in).
The Guardian have it that Bedene was hampered by his knee and may also join the masses of ATP players shutting it down for the season depending on the results of MRI. Had injury since before Wimbledon.
Can't do links on phone but it's in the article about Kyle.

I only saw the first set, but I thought Cam played really well. Going for his shots, and holding his own in the rallies. A better first serve percentage and a few less unforced errors, and who knows what might have happened. He's got tremendous potential, and the next year will be very interesting.
This is getting the be annoying. All these seeds crashing out alongside the withdrawals and I keep thinking that if only Dan hadn't been such a pillock he would have had a credible shot to win the whole thing this year.
I dont think I have seen as decimated or, to be frank, weak draw as this at this stage of a slam. But opportunity beckons for any of those guys to go on and make a name. The players left suggest to me it is generally playing quick in New York, not sure if that is true, but it would be reasonable to make a case for maybe 5 of the top half of that list making a semi and in the bottom quite possibly all of them could have a chance. Big opportunity for Kyle, though, he could really make a breakthrough here if he plays to his best, there is no one to fear apart from maybe Cilic if they reach the quarters. 7 seeds left and 4 of the top 16 only, wow.
What a joke the bottom half of the draw is, yes happy the brat Zverev is gone, but seriously, we are about to enter a WTA style era where anyone in the top 30 can win a slam. I'd be so pissed off if I was Murray, as soon as you retire, some mugs will come along and win a few slams in the weakest era possible, and be ranked alongside you in all time lists.
The Knight is spot on (as ever), Evo on these courts could have been a genuine contender.
If you just look at the bottom half as a competition in isolation many of the players should be thinking I can win that ( and so at least be a finalist ) including Kyle !!
Forget any young, developing stuff here, seize the moment. And although yes we will probably have a weaker era coming along there are enough very good looking younger players that the 22 and 23 yos ( quite apart from say the 24 to 27 yos ) have to think that whatever their theoretical peak years these may be some of their best chances coming up over the next year with so many top players possibly continuing to have injury issues and the very young still maturing
Great win for Kyle. This new world order was going to happen some time, lots of opportunity (disaster that Evo is missing it, this was his time) and Kyle is shaping up nicely given the opposition around, hopefully he will be one of those "mugs"! Interesting that with Dennis the boot is now on the other foot. They are both developing and have seen each other a few times. A fascination no match up.
