I'm not surprised there is such a low crowd watching Johnson v Kyle, the standard isnt that good and entertainment wise I find watching Kyle very hard. This US Open is very average so far. I've actually turned over to watch Coric v Zverev far higher quality and more entertaining. One match seems like a challenger the other and ATP. Glad Kyle is winning easily at the moment, he's making the most of a very kind draw.
Kyle delivers as ordered. His excellent form over the last two week continue. Anything from here is a bonus for me, although if Shapovalov comes through against Tsonga, you would probably get good odds for Kyle to match his 4th round of last year.
Very early doors in that other match but Shapovalov is an early break up in the opener against JWT.
Brilliant stuff from Kyle so far, given quite a tricky draw. Possibly his best slam performance so far, in my opinion.
Haase has been around for a long time, has shown in the past that he can test the best in the world. And Johnson is at his best on the American hard courts. I don't think he's particularly in a good place mentally at the moment after the loss of his dad earlier in the year, you could really tell tonight (and in W-S last week) that his emotions are all over the place. But he dispatched Almagro very comfortably, so for Kyle to see both players off in straight sets is extremely impressive.
I suspect it will be Shapovalov in round 3 which will be intriguing
Shame for Cam, but no discredit in being outmatched by Carreno Busta who's a class act and seems to be somewhat underrated. I always forget how good he is, such clean timing and very tactically astute. He's my pick to come through this section of the draw and make quarters.
Superb 1st US Open for Cam, lots to build on and a lot of confidence to take into the remaining US challengers with perhaps the goal of being seeded for Aussie Open qualies.
Kyle has largely survived the points drop off from his performance last year thanks to his efforts last week and this (so far). Despite the fact he is still 40 points down over the 2 weeks, (180 coming off but 95+45 going on), he is still currently at 47 in the live rankings. A win over Johnson might see him move up 2 more places, but with Karlovic and Aljaz still to play R1, that could change. In terms of those below him, only Ryan Harrison could overtake him with a win in R1. Three others could surpass him with 2 wins, (Struff, Troicki and Rublev) but anyone else would need to reach the L16 at least.
Harrison will have to beat Berdych, Struff plays Dolgopolov and then the winner of the Berdych/Harrison match, whilst Rublev plays Aljaz. Troicki seems to have the best chance of proceeding, playing Gombos and then most likely Fognini.
To update the potential live rankings, Kyle has now moved above both Aljaz and Karlovic who went out today, leaving him currently at WR45. His additional 45 points today mean his efforts over the last two weeks (95+90) have now completely covered the 180 dropping off on the next rankings revision.
Of those just behind Kyle, Struff and Harrison have also gone out so that leaves Troicki and Rublev as the closest to him of those still in the tournamnet. Troicki would probably be favourite to beat Travaglia in the next round but would also have to beat Berdych too. Rublev has to get past Dimitrov and then some.
Finally, Coric's win over Zverev today has also put him in the frame. He would have to make the QF at least, but having taken out the 4th seed, the draw has opened up and the QF is more than just a possiblity.
Let's hope Kyle can press on even further and make the task of the chasers all the more difficult.
To be fair to Kyle he's doing much better at getting wins over three sets
Re his draw I stick to it being a pretty good cumulative two round draw. Certainly not easy either match, but if you seek to reach the L32 and beyond very decent. My main concern for Kyle was more getting Haase straight off in R1 first day first match on court after all his matches last week rather than his general draw itself.
And if it is to be Shapovalov in R3 that's not bad either, rapidly as Denis is progressing. If Tsonga yet prevails his overall form of late has not been great and he would be going in following a late Wednesday five setter.
All said, Kyle has still done excellently to win these two matches in straight sets and to put himself in with what looks a very interesting R3 match and maybe PCB in a L16 match and then ... No, one match at a time as they say ( even if I did lump the first two rounds together )

Well done to Mr Edmund for the past two weeks - a very fine set of matches. Pity he'll probably be on an outer court for the next one, playing some qualifier

This is getting the be annoying. All these seeds crashing out alongside the withdrawals and I keep thinking that if only Dan hadn't been such a pillock he would have had a credible shot to win the whole thing this year.
