I hope his frustration with the Italian and Californian tax authorities become a running sore! Very encouraging, he just needs to see wining the final as a means of paying off his tax liabilities on his winnings thus far and free dinner for the week. Great news.
California has its pluses but generally the way the individual is taxed indeed the way the state is run from a fiscal point of view is not one. I just hope Liam never buys a house there property tax is discriminatory to say the least.
Seriously, though, long-term readers will know I am a huge fan of Mr Golding's game. And at one level I've always wanted him to come back properly, because I really do think he could make the top echelons. But the Tour has to be something you want, and if popping in and out is the only way he enjoys tennis, well then, popping in and out may be the best thing. At least he's using his gift somewhat and having a decent life to boot. To be honest, I think he could make (dare I use the term?) Challenger level just playing intermittent competitions.
I do think there is a big step up in quality of life and general sense of self worth once you become competitive at challenger level. Something Oli never really got to sample. Futures and Challenger qualys are a real grind a major hump in the road to get over. Just to turn up for s couple of weeks and be so competitive must instil a bit of confidence.
A bit like Evo but for very different reasons I don't think there is any question that he has the talent to be a top 100 player. Just looking at those competing in the US Open qualifying the standard is superb, to win the whole lot a real achievement in that it is a consistently strong and deep event.
Hopefully this will give him the appetite to play more often through the winter and see wher he is on the spring, lots of opportunities.
I don't see Oli on the Nottingham entry list, but he is a long way down the Roehampton list.
If this is a semi serious comeback, we would expect main draw wildcards for both based on this week's results.
He mentioned (in his really interesting interview that someone posted earlier) that he fancied playing Roehampton because it was just down the road from where he lived. But that it was difficult being unranked. And he wasn't sure it would work out.
No mention was made of Nottingham. I wouldn't think he'd be guaranteed wildcards.
And he's still on the French list for next week.
But he's obviously got other commitments so I wouldn't expect him to suddenly turn up right, left and centre.
Oli mentions so many times the problems he felt with pressure, the pressure to replicate his junior success immediately in adults. Whether this pressure came from the LTA, his parents, himself, all three, it obviously did not work.
I do feel that his wife will be very instrumental in Oli's comeback/non-comeback and her perspective on tennis success will be extremely useful.
I don't think Laura Robson struggled with the pressure of the adult game per se; I think she handled it well initially but had a debilitating injury and has struggled to gain confidence and to address certain issues in her game on return. Nor do I think that Mr Bambridge struggles with pressure: indeed, I'd say he's a case of someone really maximising his gifts by deciding the most sustainable path to a professional future and pursuing it (whether or not it's the way many posters would like to see him go!)
His domestic ranking has virtually disappeared, so he will be at the bottom of the ladder until these points are added - so another few weeks yet.
If he wants to play regularly over the next few weeks(he seems to have the bug), he will be reliant on wcs or tournaments that aren't full.
Or he could keep making SFs or better and go from SE to SE - I don't know whether he has even gone for one for next week though, maybe wants to go home. I agree with CD that Marta, with her experience of being the equivalent of a decent ATP Challenger-level player on the WTA side, could help a lot, if they both decide they want him to play on tour seriously again.

To be fair, we have had quite a few top juniors that have struggled with the pressure in the adult game - Robson, Swan, Bambo, Golding etc etc.

Golding got a WC into Queens and the seemed to give up shortly afterwards disagree about Robson she has only struggled since the injury Swan has just turned 18 [;enty of time to mature
