The biggest danger ( as I said in the battle for the top thread ) is Ostapenko nipping ahead of Jo into the final guaranteed finals spot. Now ( at least currently ) that would leave 9th onwards well behind and no 2017 Slam winners amongst them so Jo, if 8th in these circumstances, should retain by far the strongest case. But 7th is better than 8th.
On the positive side I can see Jo anyway having a better Asian swing than Ostapenko and pretty decent overall thereby guaranteeing her spot. So I do think that she'll end up OK and yes would be great to see her at the tour finals and this time competing!
Just to make more sure, Jelena needs to be told that she must be in absolute pole position for the discretionary spot if she doesn't make the top 7 so don't be worrying too much about that and just quietly prepare for the tour finals.
So wish that the Kvitova/Muguruza match had been at a later stage - but what a win for Kvitova! Meanwhile, with that defeat for Muguruza, I think Venus Williams will become the person with the strongest Slam record among the women this year (two finals, one 4th round and at least the QF here) .. and she goes up to 5th in the race. Remarkable.
Yes, would be great to see Venus win the title all things considered.
It is really all together a remarkable last 8. Towards the end of May three of the players had been out for over 6 months ( two of them ultimately for about a year ) for varied reasons, one particularly traumatic, and also Madison Keys had first appeared this year in March.
Petra Kvitova out 11/16 to 05/17, Kaia Kanepi 06/16 to 06/17, Sloane Stephens 08/16 to 07/17 - great comebacks all with Petra having won the Birmingham Premier at the end of June and Sloane having already reached two Premier 5 semi finals in two weeks even before the US Open

The final set tiebreak was horrible, though the match winning shot was a super backhand down the line winner from Sloane. Only watched the last few games.
I would have been very happy if Petra had won too but, given it's the US Open, this one's for Venus.
What an amazing career.
And so that's the US at two out of two so far.
Madison has to be the favourite, surely, against Kanepi, to make it three. Although being the favourite is no guarantee (as we've seen!!!). So it's left to Pliskova to ruin the party. And to Coco to make it a full house.
OK, now that the Americans have a full house, when was the last time one nation had all 4 of the semi finalists in a Slam women's singles or indeed men's singles?
I'd have a stab that it might be Aussie men at the Australian Open back in grass days.
