Week 34 - ATP 250 - Winston-Salem Open - Winston-Salem, NC (hard)

The lack of a discernible plan B or the ability to make in match adjustments strikes again. Dzumhir is a tidy player but shouldn't be beating Kyle on any surface.

Particularly latterly a rather jaded looking performance, of mind and at times basic good foot movement. Maybe in some ways not too unexpected with this 7th match in 7 days. Kyle wanted matches, he's certainly had some. I'm not sure what day he starts the US Open but I'd much prefer for him that it's the Tuesday.

Dzumhur is a clever player but a right "on it" Kyle would have seen him off here in straight sets. Just hope the matches have still done him good, such as seeing out these three set matches, particularly vs Medvedev, and he gets good final prep over the weekend before the US Open.

All of the Brits except Aljaz are in the bottom quarter, which is supposed to be played on Monday, I think.

That's a shame but never the less an excellent week for Kyle. A good weeks work but more to be done. In the short term he will have done his US Open chances some damage but getting 6 wins in this week to me has been a good call. If Kyle is to progress through next week he is going to have to do his work in straight sets. Obviously it would be marvellous to see him go really deep, Hasse will be a tough start, onwards and upwards as they say.

Didn't see the match - looks like it played out in the second set - but I don't think you can ever say that Top-100 player A should never, ever lose to Top-100 player B.

Tennis just isn't like that.

In the last couple of months, Thiem has lost to Schwartzman, Ferrer and Ramanathan (in the 200s). Dimitrov has lost to Medvedev and Haase (both in the 50s at the time), Lopez, and Janowicz (about 150).  They're top 10. And if you go down to the top 30 or 50 players, you'll get tons more of examples. Players lose matches, even ones against 'lesser' players.

Kyle may well have given it his all in the second set, feeling a tad tired and knowing he wasn't going to push himself to the real depths in the third, given the US Open was coming up. And he came close.

Very good week. Some excellent wins. Haase will not be easy. Well done.
