Now that it is mathematically confirmed just wanted to bump this thread by saying a HUGE congratulations to Liam for getting into the Top 100 in the world. He has suffered so many ups and downs, fought back and finally got himself in there. I am absolutely delighted for him. He is a really top guy both on and off the court.
His aim now must surely be to finished the season still inside that top 100. Another win (or two) this week would go a long way to achieving that.
But what next ? Taking out James Ward's CH ranking of 89 ? Top 64 to boost his chances of playing MD at the Masters events ?
Who knows. But at least whatever happens next, Liam can always say that he was a Top 100 player and that is an achievement to be proud of.
Broady went against his father's wishes by turning to the LTA before refusing funding again in order to try to repair the relationship, but the final blow came courtesy of the federation.
"I remember past regimes at the LTA and I don't hold the current situation responsible for this but when I did get my funding cut I think I was 23 years old," he said.
"And at the time they had this algorithm, they'd worked out statistically how many players make top 100 past a certain age and how long they stay there for and they had a stat that basically it wasn't worth a player making it past the age of 23 or whatever it was.
I don't often defend the LTA, and I'm not 100% doing it now, but cutting off funding for players are 23 year-old is not unusual, in fact it's pretty standard, from what I know.
The FFT in France certainly used to cut all direct national funding for players when they reached 22, no matter what they were ranked.
FWIW Liam is now the 10th highest ranked player not to have reached an ATP semifinal in his career. As he moves onto the ATP tour, hopefully, and out of challengers, going deep into an ATP event must be a target
Regarding Aus open entry, how close will Liam be? Depending on cut off date, further movements in ranking, his and others, number of protected rankings etc? Just thinking 128 minus 16 qualifiers then 8 WC max gets to 104, but then some in on protected ranking, minus any injured players. Is it right that more miss the Aus open because it's at start of year so if injured a bit they might miss to give a good chunk of time for rehab etc? Do we think he will be in MD on ranking?
I have a feeling Liam might just miss out on Australia, it depends on all the PR rankings of the likes of Nadal etc are fit enough to take them up. Its going to be tight I think.
