Ah pity, not exactly ideal but no disaster either.
Though better watch at her PC in case that guy from Birmingham is around now that she's lost to another "non seed" ( it was Vandeweghe then. Coco on grass, shocking ... ). Makarova clearly has her eye in so doesn't look a bad effort. Though more matches would have been preferable.
Excellent match. Jo was great considering her period out. Makarova was on top and Jo was digging in. Didn't have much a play on the two match points (one on serve and one on return).
Credit to Makarova. Disappointing but no real complaints.
Svitolina hammers Halep 6-1 6-1 in the SF. She and her final opponent Wozniacki will move ahead of Muguruza to WRs 4 & 5, the winner to WR 4, with then 4 of the top 5 not having won a Slam title.
With Ka Pliskova having huge points to defend at Cincinnati and the US Open ( 900 + 1300 ) there looks like there could be a right bun fight coming up for WR 1. Although she has clearly relatively fallen back this week that could yet involve Jo. I'd settle for her winning the US Open
