I only saw the last point - an Ace to win it - but sounds like most of the match was a struggle for Laura. Still, good that she battled through when she could have got despondent after the first set. That was a tricky first round draw too.
I'm pleased. I was hoping that she would return to her form pre the grass court season, and this seems to have happened - at least in the latter stages. This gives me hope for the rest of the American swing where she had good results last year.
Very nice to see Laura in the top 200 and beginning to develop some sort of form that suggests she belongs there. I feel she fully identifies with being an adult pro tennis player and is beginning to enjoy the grind as opposed to a teenager flying through the adult rankings as a product of natural growth of her stellar junior career.
My only worry for Laura is that the ladies game has really improved over the last two years in terms of the fitness levels of players across the top 75 or so, I don't know whether I can see her being able to power through the cohort just outside that ie the Hev's/Nicola Gibbs type player who are much more mobile and the weight of shot differential not that different. The key will be rediscovering her big lefty serve and taking advantage of it.
