Been here already, but now come on !!!

I'm sorry if he has some persistent injury issue but surely he can't keep so often taking a place in the singles draw, retire and then carry on in the doubles, where overall he has been doing fairly well

I bet that (not in reality, just saying) he will play. That's what is making him a bit unusual, he rarely retires/ or gives a walkover for doubles.

Sounds like there need to be a rule imposed regarding successive retirements. The situation is farcical. Just like Bosman got a law named after him, they can call it the Gosea law.

Although it is pretty ridiculous, it's not going to be a problem for much longer: his points will drop off and he won't be in the main draw as of right so there will be no real issue.
