Week 31 - ATP 500 - Citi Open - Washington DC, USA (hard)

Just to note that Bhambri beat Monfils, the defending champion, yesterday.

Not that beating Gael is a stop-the-press moment.....

But Bhambri won a junior Grand Slam when he was only 16. Not surprisingly, he was also JWR 1.

He is now 25, is ranked 200 or so in the world, his CH is 90 or so....

It's worthy of note.

Getting a bit worried about Kyle. 3 set losses to good players is happening WAY too often. Needs to win these matches to progress further.

For Kyle's ranking I think it is true to say that he gets very few big wins  Top 50 players and lower will have generally stuck in a really big win somewhere. Kyle's CH win remains against WR 15 ( Gasquet and Pouille ). Indeed he has just 3 top 50 wins all year, certainly recently that good win over Sock WR 17, Evo for instance has 6 such wins this year, including top 10 wins over Cilic and Thiem, though they are probably too small and varied samples to go too overboard on this year. Just a bit of a trend for now.

I read what Oakland says and yes it may just be that stage before he starts getting one or two bigger wins, gets over the line and it begins to really flow more. He has certainly put in some very competitive losing performances against top 10 players. And I know that it would take rather a lot to ever worry Oakland about Kyle

Isn't it better that he loses in three instead of two?   I know the points and money are the same and the most important thing is getting the W.  Better this conversation than asking why he never stretches the top players and never takes a set off them.

Yes, and it is a great conversation to be having. His potential for improvement at 22 is still significant, how many games has he had against top 20 players? Perhaps 15 up to the last 12 months in his whole career, that's a guess. Generally we have seen him move up virtual divisions (futures, challengers, unseeded ATP/slams in two year cycles and he seems to be about to come through the unseeded ATP level, once he does that as mentioned previously he will get byes and a pretty good idea of who he is likely to play in the round of 16 (ATP 250/500) and round of 32 in the slams and can intensively prepare the appropriate game plan.

If the top 10 were in his cohort he would thrash them!

My wife calls to say she's lunching in Wholefoods & there's tennis on one of the screens there, so she thought I might like to know. "One of them is Murray but he's even skinnier than before if that's possible, he's playing against Soares" ... Well, almost right on both counts and they did come from a break down to level the 1st set while she was talking to me, so she must count as a good luck charm. Into a tiebreak now (that's from livescores, she has lost interest and gone in search of coffee ...)
