RE: Week 31 - ATP 500 - Citi Open - Washington DC, USA (hard)

FQR:  (q2) Yuki Bhambri (IND) WR 201 defeated (q9) Liam Broady WR 357 by 2 & 4

Had a nasty feeling Bhambri would do the business.  cry

Pity for Liam but Bhambri has been Top 100 so no disgrace in defeat.

AS I have mentioned before, Liam seems to have found some consistency recently. If I have done my Maths correctly, Liam will have 131 points on Monday. But 71 of those points will have come in the last 3 months (since the beginning of May). He will have only 28 points to defend between now and the end of the calendar year. so if he can maintain his recent form, he will hopefully climb the rankings towards the back end of the year.

Good, comfortable win for Edmund overnight versus Chung, good start and sets himself up now to play Dimitrov. Good test!

And Murray and Soares won as well in straights although I probably should say that in the doubles thread, if I could find one!

Kyle is now very close to getting seeded in this type of event which will really help, first round byes giving more time to prepare for a second round game with a very good chance of a win if on form and then a QF against a seed. This I think is the land of opportunity, the premiership of the ATP tour.

So in the balance of probabilities, more practice, more quality opponents and more money.

And I'm sure someone said kyle was only a Challenger level player. Big jump from Challenger to premier league!

There isn't one.  Having only one British player in the draw doesn't justify one.  wink

Dimi edged the 1st set but Kyle has fought back to take it to a 3rd 5-7 6-4 *1-2

Another very decent performance from Kyle but he goes down 6-3 in the third. If he could just turn one of these near misses into a W against a top player it would do wonders for his confidence.

Bob I think it is inevitable as he sees them more regularly, adjusts to the pace and understands how he can utilise his strengths while mitigating theirs. Seeding will help.

Getting a bit worried about Kyle. 3 set losses to good players is happening WAY too often. Needs to win these matches to progress further.

I wouldn't be too worried. He is taking players like Dimi (WR11) to three sets - the wins will come soon

Loosing in 3 is the inevitable last step to beating the best players, we have seen it in every stage of Kyles development and we are getting down to a fairly rarefied group of players (could be called a cohort, as we are in Washington perhaps its the senate of elite players) who are seeded in ATP 500's.

Kyle will find it harder to work some out than others; there are some he may never work out. Personally he's got another 2 years to do that and another 4 before I start to get worried.
