Just looking at Kyle's ranking points. He has a real chance to progress between now and the US Open - where he will have 4th round points to defend.

Prior to that, his schedule is (courtesy of @KyleEdmundFan)

24th July-Atlanta 250
31st July-Washington 500
7th Aug-Montreal Masters
13th Aug-Cincinnati Masters

Then

28th Aug-US Open

In terms of points to defend, Kyle is facing 36 between now and the US Open. He has already gained 20 this week with his win today. Automatic entry into Montreal and Cinnicinati will guarantee him another 20 points (10 each, even for a 1st round defeat), so he has already covered off the 36.

So, I'm thinking seeding here. The current 32nd ranked player has 316 more points than Kyle. If there were just 3 injury drop outs (eg Kyrgios struggling, Djokovic talking about extended break, dare I mention Andy, etc) we are talking about a points differential of only 200 points. It's certainly not out of the realms of possibility and would make defending those R4 points that much easier.

Thanks Bob, very interesting.

Aljaz, of course on exactly the same 933 points in the latest rankings, is in a pretty similar position. He has nothing to defend before the US Open though with a full 18 counters his presumable at least10 from each of Montreal and Cincinnati would replace existing two counters of 20 so a kind of net 20 down ( as against Kyle's latest net 4 up ) and anything else he gets including this week will be slightly 'netted'.

How great if both were seeded for the US Open !

Good win for Kyle, hopefully he can kickstart his season, the fat man from Cyprus can be a tricky opponent

Yes very interesting Bob, for Aljaz as well I'm assuming (without checking) that he has an even better chance of a seeding as well. A possibility of having 3 seeded players in a Slam for the first time since when I wonder? Got to be 30plus years anyway.

Aljaz looks like he is skipping both Montreal & Cincinnatti. Did not make initial cut so can do so without picking up zero pointers.

One down already as Djokovic announces he will not play again this year.

Ah thanks, so Aljaz literally can't drop any points before the US Open, and has now added a net 25 today, though he is limiting his future adding possibilities. I would guess that he'll go for Kitzbuhel next week.

I see that for now Kyle is just an alt for both Masters events but there seem to be quite a number of doubts over and above the now withdrawn Djokovic.

Appears I jumped to the conclusion that Kyle would automatically be in Cincinnati and Montreal given his mid 40s ranking and a draw of 56. But of course, there are 7 qualifying spots and 4 WCs to take into consideration, so only Top 45 are guaranteed to get in.

But as Indi says, with Djokovic already out and others possibly withdrawing, Kyle and Aljaz should both make it, albeit just.

Good start for Kyle and a match he 'should' win next but sport doesn't always work like that.

Made the mistake of checking the score.

Kyle at 2-5*
