RE: Jodie Burrage

What I got from that is she's in the south of France. Which raises the question has she relocated her base there to be with Ben or is this just some planned time there?

I think that was just some planned time. She has back in London, but has left for the US now.

Planned schedule is San Diego, Indian Wells, Charleston and Miami.

Jodie has posted on instagram to say shes just had her 4th surgery, on her wrist, sounds like recovery is a few months. Happened before playing in San Diego. Poor thing. Get well soon.

Such a shame after breaking into the top 100. Got to be a big doubt for the grass season

Wishing her all the best - it was her ankles previously, wasn't it?

So many players at the moment having surgery or injured (not GB players necessarily, but so many in general)

If you were a parent, I'm not sure you'd encourage your child to try and pursue tennis.....

Terrible news when she'd just started to look like she would be establishing herself in the top 100. From Jodie:

Little update: I dont know where to start.. My first practise in San Deigo I hit one backhand and felt something pop in my left wrist.
After advice from multiple doctors and surgeons, surgery was the best option.
Making the decision to get my 4th surgery was brutal accepting it will take time
But smiling here because everything went well yesterday (and I was high on drugs), and the recovery process can start it wont be easy but Ive got people around me who I know will help get me through it
Thank you to everyone who continues to support me and hopefully see you in a few months x"

So I take it that the pop in her left wrist happened before Jodie played and lost her QR1 match in Ssn Diego? - which she got a bit of grief for.

Just all the best to her for as good a rehab as possible.

Oh yikes, such a shame for Jodie when she was really starting to put her game together mentally and move up the rankings. But definitely seems like the smart choice to have the surgery early rather than try to "manage" it and play on and probably make it much worse/require more complex surgery.

Fingers crossed for a speedy/smooth recovery. (Maybe she can get some advice from Emma!)

How long does she need to be out for to get a protected ranking when she returns?

Yes, a great pity that this should happen. She needs to be out of competition for 26 weeks before she can receive a Special Ranking (=protected ranking) - that would take her into the autumn. Hopefully, as it is her left wrist (and doesn't sound too major) the recovery won't take too long and she can get back to playing in the summer. Wimbledon is only 16 weeks away though, if I have counted correctly.

Thanks for the info, TA. I should imagine she'll get some wild cards into the UK grass tournaments if she's ready to come back by then and wants them.

Poor Jodie, she deserves a bit of luck.

Sounds like it maybe damaged tendons and ligaments. The fact that surgery was advised pretty much immediately indicates that her medical advisors said the injury wouldn't heal properly or possibly at all without a surgical intervention.

The fact she says see you in a few months is encouraging but also suggestive that she is looking at 3 to 4 months away from the sport.

She's had rotten luck with injuries and now faces another spell away from tennis during which she will lose match fitness.

Depending on the length of time required it will be interesting to see if she and her team opt for a full 6 month lay off which would allow her a protected ranking or risk coming back sooner which may result in niggly little injuries whilst she regains proper match fitness.

Hope she recovers well.
