Jodie Burrage

Jolie has left herself in no man's land. She'll be right on the cusp of the AO MD and if she ends up being just outside the cutoff it's going to impact her schedule and make it awkward to plan her tournaments in the lead up

Jodie was on vacation in California straight after BJK with her boyfriend. I imagine with their schedules this had been planned for most of the year.

8 players will be using their special ranking for the AO, assuming they are all ready to come back. None are named Emma (although she may get a WC).

With 18 qualifiers, 8 WCs and SRs I assume that means the initial cutoff with 96 - before withdrawals of course.

Twitter reporting that there are 8 entered with SR's to Aus Open:
- Jennifer Brady SR14
- Angelique Kerber SR31
- Ajla Tomjanovic SR33
- Naomi Osaka SR46
- Amanda Anisimova SR61
- Katy McNally SR71
- Aleksandra Krunic SR99
- Hsieh Su-wei SR106

Two are currently ranked lower than JB, and Wang Yafan has just just lost in Japan. If nobody overtakes JB this week, she might well end up as the last player in... and VERY lucky indeed.

Just 3 players left who can overtake Jodie's points . i.e. Yastremska, Friedsam and Mandlik. I think these SR's are getting ridiculous with the ranking for direct entry  getting lower. At this  rate a player will be needed to be ranked  no higher  than 90 to get  direct entry into the main draw.

Now down to 2 as Friedsam beaten. Looking better for Jodie.

Someone mentioned earlier that some players turn out for grand slams with SRs and then disappear again. Is this because they can pick up some decent prize money. If so, so not fair for players that are full time ie Jodie.

Dudi Sela did it with GS qualifying in 2022, playing only four singles matches in that season, all first round GS qualifiers, and making $68k, also depriving someone else of a place. I don't know how they can stop it but it does seem really unfair.

He also picked up £15k in playing his only two singles matches in 2021 at Wimbledon qualifiers.

Even if Jodie does miss the initial cut she will be high on the alternates list, so hopefully will get in anyway.

Yastremska was beaten so only Mandlik left can overtake Jodie. However I daresay with pullouts Jodie will get direct entry.

Mandlik was beaten in the quarterfinals so Jodie's ranking of 98 is safe for AO ranking purposes. Bencic above Jodie will not be playing and there might be other drop outs above Jodie before qualification starts.

There seems to be no end to players who haven't played for ages using SR's, PR'S to get into the main draw  in  Grand Slams at the expense of active players who have been playing all year.  Shelby Rogers is the latest with a ranking of 49 when she last played. That would push Jodie back one  but  I  daresay apart from Bencic there will be other players  currently ranked above Jodie  pulling out. Remember Betova who  Lily beat at the US Open also played at Wimbledon. She hasn't played since and hasn't won a match on the WTA tour since March 2021. Rodina was a player who had a ranking of 72 at Eastbourne 2019. She used this ranking on her return at the 2022 US Open and Australian Open 2023. Se has played quite a bit in 2023 but her ranking is no higher than 289 in 2023. Patricia Tig was another one whose ranking of 63 at Wimbledon 2021 then missing 15 months qualified her for 2 Grand Slams in 2023. Her highest ranking on return is 433 and she could not qualify for the 25k$  tournament in Roehampton. Tig is still using a ranking of 65 to play in a WTA 125K$ tournament in Angers.

It's all getting utterly ridiculous but then ridiculous thy name is WTA
