I don't know what poor Dan Clancy has done wrong.

He's 21st on the entry list (with 20 getting into the main draw by right, normally). And Irish.

But even as top seed in the qualis, he still hasn't been given a wildcard.

Must have rubbed someone up the wrong way somewhere......or the Irish federation are just being plain awkward.

I think they sometimes use the term "carpet" for astro turf.

Looks like it's 9-0 in the British / Irish match-ups today.

Sorry, Ireland, but nice of you to host it anyway

That's four guaranteed British qualifiers to the MD, and three others in with a shout.

It's better than the majority of our homegrown events......

What with being top seed in the qualis, Irish and STILL not getting a WC to the MD, Dan Glancy's week seems to be going to h*ll in a handbasket as he's taken to a third set in his FQR match, by Dodridge, and now has an MTO (presumably for him) at 0-1 down in the third....

Ireland has had a couple of Futures events at this time for a while now; the event next week is the Irish Open, which I believe is the second oldest event around after Wimbledon and obviously used to be played on grass. I think this weeks event has previously been held in Limerick, both where on grass at one time but moved to artificial grass a few years back. I dont know what the modern artificial grass plays like but the old sand based courts a few years ago used to play low like grass but often slower and could be quite slippy as well. But in general play closest to grass; I guess a lot of GB clubs have these courts (our local Harrogate Racquets Club has these types of courts) which provide for longer play around the year and less upkeep than grass or red shale and a lot of the players are probably used to playing on them.

Based on the main draw acceptance list we should expect 6 or 7 Brits in the main draw plus anyone getting through from qualies.

Ireland really not getting much luck as another of their players has to retire:

FQR: Ben Jones UNR def. Alan Gleeson (IRL) UNR 6-2 2-0 retired

FQR: (q4) Scott Duncan WR 1675 def. Bruce Strachan UNR 4-6 6-2 6-1

Only need Sizya to win now and we'd get a clean sweep of 7 out of 7 qualifiers....but he does have the q2 seed
