No meetings at ATP level but Aljaz did upset Lorenzi 6-4 7-6 during his run to the title at the Irving Challenger earlier this year. Here is hoping for a similar result.
I do love this tournament, on clay but sneaks in under the radar right off the back of Wimbledon. It does have its devotees, dedicated dirt ballers but doesn't really run into anything particular spectacular in Europe, there is a sort of half hearted second coming of the clay season that whimpers out in the ATP500 in Hamburg.
The winners are usually Italian who pop over or Central European dropping down to their closest bit of sea! Umag is to Bavarians what Weston SM is to Brummies but without the mudflats and the wave singular (Severn bore). The set up along that bit of Istrian coast in terms of clay court clubs in beautiful seaside medieval towns is mighty impressive hence the run of junior and pro ITF's hosted in the region at other times. Umag a very small town has two major tennis centres the 250 stadium that hosts this and a second about 1/2 a mile away an academy hosts the futures.
An ideal tournament for Aljaz and indeed Kyle would do well here too but his mind is obviously now focused on a bit of R and R then warming up for US hard court season

Agh. The memories. Oakie's post made me feel all nostalgic this morning and I couldn't help sharing some memories of the Umag site from the DC World group qualifier in 2013.
