Week 29 - ITF ($15K) - Don Benito (Badajoz), Spain Carpet

A win for Gabi in the doubles too; teaming up as #3 seeds, with Mia Eklund of Finland to move into the SF, 6-3 6-3
I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest that it's the first time ever a GB/Finland team has played a Japan/Malta alliance.

They play the Spanish/Swiss #2 seeds for a place in the final.

A comfortable win for Gabi as she should. Still broken a couple of times though...

I can certainly see a reason for Freya. She is lacking wins and probably confidence.

I think Gabi's own confidence took a knock at the end of the grass court season. She had two big defeats to higher ranked players, including of course her q1 loss at Wimbledon. In addition this is a hard court, so I think she's adjusting to the change of surfaces now for the hard court season. Along with Katie B, Harriet - and Mandy C at the moment - she is entered into the Woking 25k hard court event at the end of this month. So this is some advance hard court practice, with the aim being some confidence rebuilding matches too I suspect.

Gabi also has strong connections to Spain, where she lived and trained for a long time.

So I imagine she speaks Spanish and is very 'at home' over there.

The other seed in her quarter was knocked out and there's nothing, on paper, very scary about the two players who are now into a third set to determine her next opponent.

Gabi & Mia power in to the final of the doubles, 3 & 4
In that final, they will play a pair that includes the lady that Gabi beat today in the singles.

Gabi's match has started now. 3-3 with 1 break each. Gabi's opponent may be unranked but she clearly knows her way round a tennis court. Checking Kana's record, I see she played no competitive tennis for 4 years between April 2013 and June 2017. She's only 21 now, so maybe was studying. In her first tournament back in June 17 she reached the SF of a 15k in Victoria, BC. This is just her second return tournament. Gabi is going to have a tough match, and whatever Kana's recent history she clearly has the ability to climb quickly in the ranks and way beyond her four year old CH.

A critical 8th and 9th game in the first set. Gabi saved 2BPs on her serve, then broke in the next game and held serve to win the first set 6-4

According to Google, Kana Daniel has been at Penn and just graduated this year.
But her hometown is listed as Valencia ... and her aim is to 'work in finance in a big city' and become an entrepreneur !

Ha! In that case it doesn't sound like her return to the Futures circuit will be a long one!!!

Her first serve has fallen away in the second set too, perhaps because Gabi is chasing her serve much more now... Gabi serving at 6-4 3-0

A comfortable if competitive 6-4 6-2 victory for Gabi in the end.

I see that one of her potential SF opponents is Sinead Lohan, who beat Alicia Barnett in the final of the 15k in Portugal last week. Sinead will have to overcome the 3rd seed first though later on today.

Sinead Lohan did not come through, instead, Gabi will play third seed, Luque Moreno WR625

Meanwhile, the doubles final is under way, with Gabi going for just her second ever doubles title - the other was also in Spain.
Gabi & Mia are 2-2* against Parres Azcoitia/Masini

A lack of updates is rarely good news and Gabi+ lost 3&3.
