QF: (1) Luke Bambridge & David O'Hare (IRL) CR 312 (173+139) defeated Alexander Sarkissian & Raymond Sarmiento (USA/USA) CR 2246 (1279+967) by 6-3 7-6(5)
Luke continues to push up his doubles CH, now up to a live ranking of 156 and will go top 150 if they win the title. He'll be up to GB #6 too if they just win their SF.
Good to see, and with his singles too, him getting on with business so. Don't know if he's even yet had time to pick up his Samantha Murray Trophy 2017.
Rola and Torpegaard are the sort of team for which the term 'underranked' was invented: Rola was top 100 singles and top 200 doubles quite recently; Torpegaard is excellent (probably the closest equivalent in terms of accomplishments would be Cameron Norrie), but still at university. Both have played for the same university, which may be why they are partners here. Would love to see a win by Mr Bambridge and Mr O'Hare.
Blaz Rola is the most decorated Collegiate tennis player produced by Ohio State (10-13) ever, NCAA doubles champion 2012, singles champion 2013 and quit. So arguably more accomplished than both Cam and Mikael. Blaz would be a direct contemporary of David O'Hare when he was at Memphis. So under ranked maybe but the No 39 ranked (at his peak) college doubles player will be well aware of the NCAA champion.
At no point did Blaz and Mikael overlap at OSU indeed there is a two year gap, although Blaz's success may well have been instrumental in recruiting another small nation Davis Cup player.
I find it surprising that Mikael is staying for his senior year but perhaps shouldn't in that he has been an OSU scholar athlete 15,16 and 17. Winning Big-10 scholar athlete honours in 16 and 17.
Reassuringly Cam has the best "pro" record while in college up to junior year which is surely what it's all about.

What's striking about these wins is that they're not only good - they're decisive. Not just holding serve but consistently breaking opponents. Excellent stuff.
So Luke will rise into the top 150 in the next rankings with these 107 points from two weeks. David was defending a little matter of 100 points in total from 3 counters last year so he still manages to come out a net 7 points ahead.
Certainly not overall exactly a particularly strong challenger, but they did the business pretty dominantly and as said that does look a particularly good win in the SF.
