QR1: (q6) Samantha Murray WR 676 v Safiya Carrington USA UNR (16yo junior WR 1060 / CH 355 in 2016)

Emily Webley-Smith was the 2nd Alt but the 1st Alt is in the qualifying draw so unless the Canadians have given her a main draw wild card, she must be a very late withdrawal. I did wonder when I saw her posting pics that appeared to be taken in London. 

This place should have good memories for Sam (and, remotely, for many of us!) though - when she was last here, in 2013, she was the 3rd seed, beat 8th seed Naomi Broady in the QFs and lost to a certain Johanna Konta (the top seed) in the final. The 4th Brit in the main draw, Jade Windley, upset a Canadian seed in R1 too, to make it an almost perfect tournament for the Brits overall.

That did look hugely impressive.

Except ITF live score shows that it was Kukharchuk that won the second set 6-0 in a complete reversal and is now 5-2* up in the final set
