Weeks 27 & 28 - Wimbledon (grass) - mixed doubles

Skupski and Rae at 5-7 6-4 6-6 ... quite a match, whatever happens.

Some of Joss' play had been amazing in this third set. Her reactions at times are ridiculous! Really well done to her, regardless of the result.

QF:  (1) Jamie Murray & Martina Hingis (SUI) CR 3 (5+3) vs (WC) Ken Skupski & Joss Rae CR 183 (87+96)  bleh

Divided loyalties, but I kinda lean towards the all-British partnership in that one.

QF:  (10) Rohan Bopanna & Gabriela Dabrowski (IND/CAN) CR 44 (21+23) vs Henri Kontinen (FIN) & Heather Watson CR 82 (1+81)

How fortunate are we? I'm not normally a fan of mixed doubles, but those were two amazing matches. The Kontinen/Watson Dodig/Mirza had some of the best quality imaginable (I see Kontinen's ridiculous shot has made the Wimbledon website's front page - if you didn't see it, take a look) but it never felt that close. The Skupski/Rae Mirnyi/Makarova had high quality tennis AND was an absolute nail-biter. The mental fortitude, as well as the tennis skills, needed to win it must have been quite something. Well done to Ms Rae and Mr Skupski. Just superb.

Hope that this not only is a joy for them here and now but also helps them in the coming months/years. Having a Court 1 crowd roar as you come through a tight match like that must be the kind of memory you can store away to drawn on when necessary.

(PS: I couldn't help thinking of Madeline. She would have had to buy new cushions - but wouldn't she have loved it?)

Here's one I think has slipped under the radar, sadly for the wrong reason, though there's no disgrace in the defeat:

L64:  (ALT) Brydan Klein & Harriet Dart CR 598 (151+447) vs BYE

*****

L32:  John Peers & Sabine Lisicki (AUS/GER) CR 253 (2+251) defeated (ALT) Brydan Klein & Harriet Dart CR 598 (151+447) by 1 & 4

So Ken & Joss get to play on Court 1 & Centre on successive days.  biggrin  The stuff of which the dreams of most tennis players plying their trade lower down the pecking order are made!

I think if anything the Rae match was higher quality, but both great adverts for the joys of mixed doubles :)

Wonderful matches. It's such a shame you get no ranking points to add to your doubles total.

Every match I see with Rae in she plays superbly - why is she not ranked higher?!
