The Summer Cup season started yesterday with qualifying for the under 14 finals (which act as a qualifier for the world juniors). Our team of Joel Pierleoni, Jack Pinnington Jones and Harry Lazell defeated Norway yesterday, but lost agonisingly today to Sweden. Joel lost the number 2 singles before Jack edged out Leo Borg (Bjorn's son) 6-4 4-6 6-4 The pair combined in the doubles, going down 10-8 in the match tiebreak, so we will not qualify for the finals
Qualifying is under way for the under 12s (Nations Challenge by Head). Our team of Luca Pow, Alexander Tikhonov and Hugo Coquelin are playing in Dijon, and beat France & Slovenia 2-1 (Luca featuring in all 4 won matches) to top Group B. They play the second team in Group A (Serbia) tomorrow, to decide who qualifies for the finals
The under 18 team of Aidan McHugh, Jack Molloy and Barnaby Smith start their qualifying group in the National Tennis Centre on Thursday against Bulgaria, as both teams have a bye in round 1 (quite a few countries don't bother sending a team for the under 18 event).
The under 16 event is much more competitive, with places in the Junior Davis Cup at stake. Our team (Jack Draper, George Loffhagen and Harry Wendelken) should be seeded 2 in their qualifying group, behind a strong Romanian team. The draw isn't up yet on Tennis Europe though
The under 16s gained the first of the two wins they need to reach the European finals. Their next opponents have a useful number 1 (Duje Ajdukovic) ranked just outside the top 100 and a second player ranked around 200, so will be no pushovers.

Jack Draper d. Kevin Chahoud 6-7(6) 6-0 6-3
No details yet from the under16s, but I gather from Twitter that the team lost and therefore failed to qualify. However the under 18s have at least made it to the final 8

The under 18s are playing Belgium for seeding rights and the two singles have been shared (Barnaby d. Frederic Jacobs and Aidan lost in 3 to Zizou Bergs - ranked JWR28)
Jack and Barnaby edged the doubles to gain seeding rights. France may well be the team to beat in the finals, with three players ranked in the top 25, led by Corentin Moutet (ATP 335)

Just for info, there are 16 teams qualified for the World Juniors U14, with the seeds being:
USA, China, Spain, Argentina, Russia, Czech Rep., Japan, Brazil.
A superb win for the under 18 boys to reach the semis. Their opponents in the quarters fielded two top 50 players in the singles, but Aidan was able to find a way past the JWR15. In the semis take on Russia, whose top player is in the under 16 finals (Skatov), but still have higher ranked players than us

Number 1 Aidan was absent from today's rematch, and the rejigged team could not gain the win for third place. France duly won the trophy. In the under 16s our conquerors Croatia reached the final, losing to the Czech Republic (led by top 2002 Dalibor Svrcina)
