I hope Steven, or anyone else on the Forum, didn't place a bet on Laura to win.

One good betting tactic is always to bet (in small amounts) against the British player.

It means you're always in a win-win situation: the player wins and you don't care you lost 50p, you're so pleased they won; the player loses and you're miffed but at least you've made a few bob. Unfortunately it's working well this morning....

I didn't - it's illegal to bet online from the US - some of the sites won't even let you view odds once they've identified the IP address. I don't think I ever bet more than £1 on tennis even when I was in the UK (just playing with the £10 I had to put into a bet365 account to be able to view the streams, which I miss nowadays!), mainly along the lines of what CD suggests.

I would have been tempted to put £1 on Laura having seen the odds (and not seen Haddad Maia's Mallorca results, though I still thought Laura ought to win even after those were brought to my attention) but only on the basis that the odds would close up before the match and I could close out the bet at a (tiny) profit before Laura had the chance to make a dog's breakfast of the match, which, very sadly, it seems she did.

As has been mentioned above, the really wasted opportunity here is that most of her pre-injury weaknesses were things that didn't involve the wrist, like fitness, movement etc. If she'd used the time away from the game to do masses of work on those areas (I imagine she wasn't prevented from doing this by having a full-time job, in the same way a lower-ranked player like Lisa had to), she could have come back with the chance to be a top 20 player. I realise it must be hard to motivate yourself for months on end when there's no immediate prospect of playing but, even so, when the potential rewards are that big, you'd think it wouldn't be impossible. In the end, it's her choice though.

That was poor from Laura today, not up to the level she's been playing at that's for certain. Tight as a drum, whereas before she always upped her game here at Wimby. Still I am positive going forward, as I've seen ALOT of Laura playing at Notts and Ilkley, and she was so much better. Its interesting when Laura has a bad match, you get a lot of negative analysis ( fair enough ) But I try to look at the big picture objectively. Start of the year I wasn't very hopeful, but now I think she'll 100% get back in the top 100. 1st serve needs more mph, movement will always be poor, but there's no excuse regarding fitness, which needs to improve. Still getting back to the ITF circuit will be good for her, and will give her the wins to build the confidence back up again.

Perhaps she will relax more in the doubles. She seems to have fun playing doubles and she always seems to play better when she is smiling and happy.

Argh it looks as though Hev and Jo will be playing at the same time, sadly.

Yes, the GB top 3 will all be in action simultaneously. Can we get three wins at the same time?

Afraid Naomi rather gave it away through careless errors. First set Begu made more errors than I expected but still managed to hold throughout, saving just one bp with an unreturned first serve. 2nd set Naomi played a wretched opening game with 2 dfs and 2 forehand ues, to get broken. The occasional super shot from Naomi, and some decent defence at times but so many unforced errors, especially on important points, bps, 30-30 and 40-40. Begu kept it relatively safe this set, just one df and a poor drop shot.

Naomi's serve was surprisingly ordinary. More body serves than attempts to get aces. 2nd serve was a disaster. 5 dfs with only 1 unreturned.

Not sure why Naomi performs so poorly at Wimbledon. The tactics today seemed rather timid, though a couple of horror volleys, one an easy drive volley error long, made me suspect the score-line wouldn't have been that different had Naomi attacked more.

Take away her serve her whole game is a bit ordinary imo.

Yes. Bless Heather, but that was hard going at the end.

But I have a big smile.....smile

Mind you, if the Belgian were a British player, we'd all be slating her for under-performing and hitting basketfuls of unforced errors etc. etc. etc.

Great win for Heather.
