One thing I did wonder about that scream from the crowd at match point, could/should the umpire call an instant let? What are the rules on noises or other disturbances that might interfere with play or break the players' concentration?
I wondered that too, but apparently the rule is that only the linesman/umpire counts, and there can be very noisy matches in some parts of the world. It was a shame though.
I thought Halep was the better player in at least the first two sets, then Jo managed to get her nerves under control so cut her UE count and play bigger shots. I'm not too hopeful against Venus, but I do hope that she gets the W. She'll need to be on her A game from the start or she'll get blasted off court.
Yes, you simply can't stop a point or play a let for a noise from the crowd or essentially any non tennis official noise because these can be so many and varied hence players are told from a very young age to keep playing whatever.
And actually if a shriek can stop a point what's to stop a supporter of a player in trouble in a point letting out a shriek. No, it's just a road that can't be gone down, and Halep will know this, hence not the slightest appeal after her brain fade.
It was still of couse very unfortunate though ( Jaggy ! ) who knows the background at all of the female shrieker and again, while very unfortunate, it is fairly clear that she thought Halep's shot was going out and I suppose in the general excitement got too caught up and ahead of herself. It certainly wasn't say to put anyone off and as Jo herself and others have said could have seriously put Jo off.
There was a point re-played at RG, wasn't there?, when that metal thingy collapsed. But that sounded like an explosion and everybody jumped out of their skins.
Indy's point is right: the problem is that if you allow that the point gets replayed for shrieks from the crowd, then (a very few) spectators will know they can do it whenever the point is going against their player.
It's not dissimilar to if your cap blows off, for instance: you lose the point, because if the rule was that the point was replayed then any player about to lose a point would cunningly knock his cap off.
No pressure on Ms Konta, then, with Mr Murray out. Hope that Kontinen/Watson and Murray/Hingis also get through so that she doesn't have to bear the full brunt of the attention.

For what it's worth Skupski (K) and Rae are also still in the mix (excuse the pun)
I really hope the press concentrate on celebrating Kontas success and not Britains most successful
Woman in 30 years. I said earlier I do find it cringeworthy, and it's getting worse. I actually feel sorry for Jo she's constantly got it shoved in her face, The Aussies don't make as a big a deal out of it when she went far over there.
It may sound a big strange, especially as this is a British tennis forum and we talk about British players, but I've never been a fan of flag waving. The Union Jack is a bit of a colonial throwback and is often used in the wrong way. Maybe I'm biased as in Scotland it's used in a sectarian way.
I know I'll get shot down on here for saying this again, but I'd love Jo to win Wimbledon, we just don't need to take the success from her for The United Kingdom empire and sporting achievements. Hope that makes sense.
Oh, my memories were that the Aussies weren't slow at all in pointing out where Jo was born with some of their media basically claiming her and Jo having to emphasise I recall in at least one on court interview that it was good to get the support but she was British now and happy to be British. I think the interviewer had said something like we'll welcome you back any time.
And I must say that I honestly just haven't seen the inner cringing from Jo that you say you see in the recent British interviews, but I think I maybe saw it in Australia.
Don't disagree that our media may go on about the last British this and that too much, especially where she comes from, but I'm seeing and not seeing some different things from you.
I don't mind the way the press seem to be covering Jo's successes (so far at least) although I do agree that the 'first time in Lord-knows-how-many years bit' gets rather irksome.
The Britishness bit is OK (although not a flag-waving person either).
But what annoyed me is that if you're going to do ultra British media coverage, then I expect every British victory to be mentioned - every one. Just briefly maybe, in a round-up. Or maybe just results on the screen. But EVERY ONE. It's Wimbledon, it's Britain, and they're British victories for God's sake.
The fact that the Skupskis hardly made the BBC round-up is criminal. But I want two minutes to cover R1 mixed doubles, wheelchair matches, juniors, the whole shebang. It doesn't seem much to ask.
Smiled: "I was pretty serious from about nine," Konta says. "I came home and said, 'Dad, I want to be the best in the world.' So I woke him up every morning at 5am to go running."
Interesting: "Aged 12, she was ranked as merely the 388th best junior in Australia".
Never a truer word said, Sam: "the level of effort and daily diligence that she has put in is an exceptional talent in its own right."

We could all learn from the Edison quote.
'Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.'
I'm surprised that Jo is shorter odds to beat Venus Williams today than she was to beat Simona Halep on Tuesday. I'm expecting another tight match today, but I would say that Venus is a slightly tougher opponent than Halep on a grass court.
Is it my imagination, or does Venus play better in tournaments when Serena isn't entered? I don't know if it is simply that she gets overshadowed when her younger sister is playing, but from my (admittedly limited) viewing she seems to have much more success when she is the lone Williams.
