The number 1 topic is actually in Jo's favour, because assuming she plays Halep gives Simona extra pressure knowing that winning that quarter will make her number 1.

I wonder how much really at a Grand Slam ??  I would think it is hugely more about simply winning the matches and going for the titles ( and I am pretty sure that would have been just about all her focus at the French Open final when she could also have gone to #1, so much more about that first Slam title and that would have been the big pressure ).

At the moment it looks most likely to be Halep in the next round. Jo has lost twice to her in two in Federation Cup events and beaten her twice in three in tournaments.

We ll see Indiana, if Konta plays as she did today then I think she ll beat Halep. Both have bottle issues in the past, but Jo looks to be past that.

I actually thought Garcia was the better player today, she's got a great game plays it the way I like to watch. Konta reverted to a Wozniacki style of making little mistakes I thought. Granted Garcias serve makes it seem like that. Different style from Jo today along with her composure. Not a fan of that style but it's effective so think it's the way forward for her in the interim. True champions can change their game to adapt to their opponent. Today she would have beaten Serena I think.

Can see Jo winning the title and if she plays like that, can't see anyone stopping her.

All salute Jo Konta. First GB woman QF since Jo Durie back in 1983.
Fully deserved after some quality play.
Just so, so good for British Tennis.

I cringed at that comment and you could see Jo cringing inside as well. Britain can take no claim to her success. Funding cut, off to Spain and did it herself. We should offer her support her of course but these stats makes me cringe. No credit to Britain, all to Jo. Having lived in Australia I would go back there in a heartbeat. Wonder if Jo is ever tempted.

What a troll like comment. Jo herself has said that she chooses to be British so Rich's comment stands.

Extremely good quality match.

I feel Britain can take some credit for Jo's success, Jaggy, she's been here since a youngish teenager. So she was here for really formative years. Part of Britain as a whole. And part of the British tennis system.

The big question that your post implies, to me, is why did all the LTA coaches who were investing so much money/time/effort in her, only get her to WR 100-150 or so? But as soon as she broke away (i.e. was dropped), she found new coaches who got her going and making the most amazing strides? Do those coaches have anything to answer for in their end-of-year evaluations?

But great credit to Jo too, of course, and the buck always stops there. Super match and super result.

It's my opinion, and I'm not alone in saying that. My point stands as does Rich's point. I cringed I'm sorry it's a natural reaction. I think you should apologise frankly.

There seems to be a problem some people have in not being able to accept other peoples opinions. A troll is someone who abuses people online. You calling me that ironically makes you fit into that category. Free speech and allowing people their own opinions is allowed. Perhaps you should think about that take a step back and post again. I have not abused any poster on this forum at any time.

So I decided I had a half hour to spare and took a look at the head to heads etc for remaining singles fields.

I went by:

1) Last grass match played between the 2 players

2) If no grass played, last hard or indoor match

3) if no hard or indoor, last clay

4) If not played on any surface, then Wimbledon seeding or ranking if no seeding position

So, on that basis, here is how the field might pan out

Muguruza bt Kerber

Radwanska bt Kuznetsova

Rybarikova bt Martic

Wozniacki bt Vandeweghe

Williams bt Konjuh

Svitolina bt Ostapenko

Garcia bt Konta (sorry, she beat Jo at Indian Wells last time out)

Halep bt Azarenka

Quarters:

Muguruza bt Radwanska

Wozniacki bt Rybarikova

Williams bt Svitolina

Halep bt Garcia

Semis :

Muguruza bt Wozniacki

Williams bt Halep

FINAL

Venus Williams to beat Muguruza (last time played on hard was Wuhan in 2015).

So, do folks reckon Venus can win this year? If not who??

forget h2h as a way of predicting - 4 out of 8 isnt better than tossing a coin! But main thing is Jo won , good luck to her and Halep up next...

Muguruza v Kuznetsova

Rybarikova v Vandeweghe

Williams v Ostapenko

Konta v Halep

Some good games to look forward to tomorrow
