A tremendous match, and incredibly resilient from Jo to hang on and come through at the end, with a couple of UEs late on by Donna. But what a performance from her too, and for the second time now against Jo in a few weeks. She is up now to 50 in the live rankings but for the life of me I don't understand why she is not higher than that with the game she has! Lovely to see the exchange and warmth between the two at the end.
Heather now up to 78 in the live rankings, so definitely good now for the US open, even if she slips back a few places as others play their R2 matches as well. A great result from her too today. So good to see her confidence grow again.

Superb and Jo is some match player these days. And also so well done by Donna and great to see her pushing on again, probably to a new CH after Wimbledon ( and she can certainly go a fair bit higher ) though today will hurt for a bit.
Petra K has gone out to Madison Brengle 6-3 1-6 6-2.
I just caught her in a MTO having tests, not on her hand, so something wasn't right with her.
During that MTO the camera switched to Madison and the commentator informed us that a win here would be the American's first ever main draw singles win at Wimbledon. This was of course a R2 match !

As fairly often with Petra, notably at the Australian Open, US Open or Cincinnati, she can't handle the heat due to respiratory problems similar to asthma.
She really suffered in the most blazing heat of the days sun, almost melting from the get go. In the MTO they seemed to check her additionally for heat-stroke/illness, taking her pulse, and checking her breathing. The hand was not seemingly affected
It was a real shame, as yet again, she was unable to perform to her best, as her condition affected her so badly.
Take nothing away from Madison Brengle though, who played very well.
Looking ahead it does potentially open things up for Johanna, but there's a small matter of Maria Sakkari to not be under-estimated, first.
Ostapenko and Keys are also a set down in other late matches.

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.
I only caught the last half an hour of Jo's match but it looked like a fantastic match. With Petra out, Jo looks to have a pretty good draw to the quarter finals too, though you never know with the WTA, any player is capable of being brilliant or terrible.

Good insight ( and once I read it I did at least recall Petra had had some heat issues ), not shared at all by 'Today at Wimbledon', which purely talked about getting over the attack ( though clearly that could take who knows how long too ).
Can someone please explain where Hev's form has come from ??? I mean even in my wildest dreams, I couldn't have predicted this level from her over the last 2 weeks, brilliant today, much better than her R1, just a shame it's Vika next, who looks very good, still give her a decent shot on this form though.
Pesky Vekic looked like she was going to do another Notts, but somehow Jo pulled it out, and as said earlier draw has opened up, Petch's player up next.
What a nerve shredding match ! Both Konta and Vecic played some great tennis and generally served superbly . Although this was just a second round match I think it's Jo Kontas best ever performance .
The pressure on her and the way she saved break points and several luv thirty situations in the final set was fantastic , you learn more about a player in these very close matches than an easy two set win.
In terms of Heather Watson it's great to see her coming back to form and her first set performance was the best she's played in many years. It's going to be very hard against Azarenka in the next round but whatever happens she's had a great few weeks.
Although Kvitovas loss open up the draw for Jo it was sad to see her go out in that manner, she's been through such a terrible time and I would have liked to see her win a few more rounds before of course doing the honourable thing and losing to Jo in the fourth round!
If one had a pound for every time Ms Watson has dipped in form, been written off by all and sundry, and then had a spectacular result or two followed by a run of confidence that tiook her back up the rankings, one would be a wealthy person. Rollercoasters (especially this very personable one) are fun !
