I was surprised that young Skatov wasn't seeded. But looking at the entry list I see why. His entry junior ranking of 22 was 'just' 18th on the list and he's now JWR 27. Rather a strong field !!

Anyway hope no spectators take to shouting Tim-o-fee !

So an unranked British lad beats the player ranked adult ATP 337 !

But it's nice to know that the future of French histrionics and amateur theatrical tennis is in safe hands thanks to Co Moutet.
And even nicer to know that Hamish most thoroughly deserved his win against the top seed and, with his serve on grass, I can't help thinking we'll be seeing more of him in various Wimbly permutations.

Aidan, though, gets the prize for prettiest one-handed backhand and absolutely the best drive volleys, real corkers, he's got the shot sussed. (Supported by Leon Smith and, I assume, brother).

George L is a new 'little fave', an interesting work in progress. Our 2001-ers are a good batch.
Anton pummeled his opponent with an impressive display of power.
But so sad that Barnaby got pipped at the post. (and Finn was rather disappointing).

Great to see Jonny O and Liam down supporting too. Jonny O, in particular, was there for Hamish for the whole match (good Scottish solidarity), cheering him on. And even helping him out at the end : as Hamish was taking for ever collecting his stuff at the end, and looking a bit dazed, it was Jonny who shouted out 'don't forget the umpire, mate' - I guess Hamish hasn't played many umpired matches or had just completely zapped that he was supposed to shake hands - but it was lovely to see the 'big' guys looking after the 'littl'uns'.

Hamish couldn't quite follow up his exploits of yesterday but Aidan takes over the mantle of giant killer, putting out Timofey Skatov.

That's a brilliant win. Well done. Your comments on his play the other CD were interesting, as they reflected comments from Toby Smith in an article I found when googling some of the juniors prior to this tournament: www.milngavieherald.co.uk/sport/more-sport/mchugh-is-scotland-s-young-tennis-player-of-the-year-1-4382677. And so impressive that he's been working around taking his Highers in May. His family/school/coach seem to be creating a really positive environment for a very positive person: hope it continues.

Thanks for the reports CD - thought you might be tempted to go down (I certainly would if I were in the London area). A good day for Aidan winning a round of doubles as well.

R3

(WC) Aidan McHugh v Matteo Martineau (FRA)

Hamish's victory over the boy ranked ATP 341 obviously got a lot of attention on day one.

But just to note some of the other results in terms of adult rankings:

The lad who beat Hamish in three yesterday has an adult ranking of ATP 1167

The boy who beat Finn in R1 is ranked ATP 819.

Anton's victor from yesterday also has a low ATP ranking, as does Jack Draper's.

Also, George's Loffhagen has a match point in R1 and came so close to beating the ultra-solid Japanese player who is ranked ATP WR 1308.

Jack Molloy's victor was also ranked previously.

(And, yes, David, on a sunny day, when it's round one and you can therefore see a whole packet of players you want to see - what could be better than a little scoot down to Roehampton? )

*shock alert" Hamish leads top seed Corentin Moutet 5-1 in the decider

George has just broken Shimizu and will serve for the match at 6-5

Just to note that the French boy that Hamish knocked out in spectacular style has just made the semis of a Challenger.

So that means that Hamish would have made the final smile

And, even further, the lad that Hamish beat this time 11 months ago has now gone and won the first round of Roland Garros......

May 2021: As Moutet (Dan Evans' nemesis) ticks up 6 places to ATP 67, just thought I'd re-highlight Hamish Stewart's most memorable and exciting win over him, three years ago. It was a wonderful match, with lots of Moutet Am-dram moments, and Hamish playing a blinder.......... biggrin
