With tomorrow's OoP out, I see that Kyle v Alex Ward is first match up on Court 3. This is great for the ground pass spectators as anyone can get on to this court, assuming the rules are the same as last year. But who do I want to win ?
As you all know, I am a massive Kyle fan. I first saw him play the week before he scored his first ranking point and since then, I have had the pleasure of meeting Kyle and his family on multiple occasions. I have also met Alex several times and you will not find a nicer guy on the tour. When I was struggling for accommodation at the Vale do Lobo tournament a couple of years back, he sorted me out a sofa bed in the apartment he was sharing with Marzi, in return for a taxi ride.
Kyle has never won a match at Wimbledon and I know how much it would mean to him to break his duck in his home tournament. For Kyle, this is so much more than cash and ranking points, but a chance to win a match at the home of tennis, in front of the GB fans. But Kyle will have a top career in tennis regardless of tomorrow's result, whereas for Alex, the additional cash for a 1st round win alone, would help to finance another entire season for him, not to mention what it would do for his confidence. What a dilemma.
I am totally split on this one and I know I am going to be both delighted and gutted either way.
I wonder if Mahut and Isner are worried about their record match. We are 2 sets all between Aljaz and Karlovic - 6-7 7-6 6-7 7-6 and not a break of serve in sight.
Kyrgios was a potential opponent for Murray in the 4th round. Most likely opponent now is Pouille which on grass is a better option for Andy.
In the QF, Andy is scheduled to meet Wawrinka, but I wouldn't be surprised if Medvedev takes him out later today. All we need now is Andy to win a few matches of his own.
They don't call me an ex champion of Battle of the Boards for nothing, you know.
Draw opened up a bit for Andy if he can play himself in - FO repeat??
Watching Aljaz playing Karlovic just now and a couple of observations - the commentators are almost entirely focused on Karlovic and his serve, age etc little about Bedene; if this was Kyle or Dan or a james Ward I suspect the eulogies would be much more. Shame.
Secondly, the grass on court 3 looks quite dug up on the baseline, a couple of bad bounces and surprising for this early in the champs. It almost looks like the grass has been damp and cut up through the foot work on the baseline at this stage. Been at work all day so not sure if other courts suffering...
