Weeks 27 & 28 - Wimbledon (grass) - men's singles

If Kyle wasn't English would we be disappointed with Alex's draw? He's missed the seeds and he has a chance! I wonder if it's about 20% chance!

Great draw for Kyle, I haven't really followed Alex which probably says more about me than him. From a dispassionate perspective I feel playing another British player who has come through not only qualifying but had to win his way in through the pre qualifying tournament is about as good a draw as you can get. Alex carries no mystery and yes some good wins in in qualifying but also plenty of good fortune around the fitness of his opponents. Grass may not be Kyles best surface, things may change, I just hope he can relax a bit enjoy the experience and play on it a lot over the next two weeks !

There was no good fortune that I'm aware of with either Gerasimov or Go Soeda. Mr Ward just played very well. With Gabashvili, my sense (supported by CD's on-site comments) was that while injured, he was going to throw everything he had at the initial sets in the hope of overcoming the WC ... but the WC didn't go away. So it was very much a match won, not given.

I think it's a good draw for both ... though I would have preferred some others!

Very good point. Alex has had a great run and he's playing an unseeded player who isn't that great on grass - maybe just maybe..

I'll be happy with whoever lands in the second round out of these two, but my British underdog/romantic side would like Alex to win.

And so Andy plays Bublik....

Don't think it's been mentioned (sorry if it has) but SO worth noting that, in Russian, Bublik means bagel

Quick trivia question (no googling!) - Which was the last male singles slam title won by someone not entered in the draw for Wimbledon this year?

The dominance of the five main Slam winners over the past twelve years is staggering.

On a slightly less stratospheric, but very happy, note, it was pleasant to see that Alex Ward's qualification was noted not only in the UK, but also in Spain, where he is often based: buzz.eurosport.es/redes-sociales/la-increible-historia-de-alex-ward-en-wimbledon-no-855-del-atp-30134/.

I agree we've had 5 dominant slam winners, but there's also Cilic and Delpo, who have won 1 each I believe, but they are not the answers as they're playing here.

Great celebration by Alex, beautifully understated but I can feel his glow of personal satisfaction from here!

Andy 1st on centre, Nozza looks like he's got the BBC2 early coverage spot, once Sue has finished all her chats with everybody and everyone.
