Weeks 27 & 28 - Wimbledon (grass) - men's singles

I really hope it is not a Federer win tomorrow. Fed is a great player and one of the all time greats, but is generally overrated.

Many of his early slams titles came against what can only be described as mugs, baghdatitis, Gonzarlez, Tsonga, Philapousis, safin,

But the likes of Novak and Nadal have only won their slams against the cream of the cream. He's only actually beaten Nadal/Novak in 4 slam finals, and has a losing record in finals against those 2.

This is probably the poorest men's tournament in terms of entertainment and as a tournament on the whole in my living memory. Certainly this century can't remember being so nonplussed by a lot of the matches, and Federer winning this at a canter just now regardless of how fit Cilic is.

Women's on the other hand was great entertainment, some really top tennis and great matches.

Yup,  This is worse than some of the earlier slam Fed wins against the likes of Bahgdatitis et al.

Undoubtably Roger is a true great ( one can argue just how great ). But he certainly doesn't do humility. I heard him talking about how enormous, historic and great an achievement it would be to win 8 Wimbledon titles in a way a bit OTT even for him. I'm thinking "Roger, let others say that".

I have loved watching much of his tennis over the years, but have never really taken to the man.

Roger the Lodger wins by 3, 1 & 4 in under two hours.  disbelief  Daylight robbery!  furious   $64,000 question:  why do all (& I mean all) of the so-called experts/pundits (even Rod Laver) insist that "everyone loves Roger"?  I, for one, do NOT!!! I don't care how classy a player other people think he is.  no  I just wish Andy had been 100% fit.  cry

Thirded from me as well. Never been able to put my finger on it. I prefer Novak who although has his faults appears more genuine. A fit Andy Murray would have made the final and gave Federer a match at the very least. He's not dropped a set but hasn't really had to beat any top players. 3/7 guys played not fit and the others very straight forward. Feels like a hollow win this year, even watching the 'celebrations' just now seems a bit contrived.

I'm another one who doesn't really like Fed.

He used to be King of the backhanded compliment back in the day as well, some directed at Andy. Maybe at the Aus Open?

OK, so it's only me then ?

I love Roger, mainly because his tennis is so gorgeous, but also as a man.
He seems a very decent family man, very well liked by most of the other players, great mates with Rafa, when they could have been rivals and enemies, and so on.
He is maybe a tad 'Swiss' but I can't really hold that against him.

Well done, Rog !

(Add: although I do agree with Jaggy that this year's men's tournament has been pretty lacklustre - Nadal v Gilles Muller was my favourite match. And there weren't many contenders. But, again, can't really hold that against Roger).

I thought Muller was sensational but he ran out of steam in the match against Marin. Unfortunately I am not a FedEx fan most of his matches this year were boring!

Having said all of that above about Roger and the consensus has been he has won a lot of what you might call boring matches it is probably as Coup Droit says because he has such a beautiful and effortless game. Technique wise there is surely no argument of him being the GOAT and there is no reason why he can't go on for another 2 or 3 years. The most popular players to watch are always those who roll around the court jumping and stretching without such a serene technique.

I also wonder if maybe the ATP will rethink their policy on mandatory events. Roger will probably have had to pay 'fines' for the privilege of resting and sitting out tournaments, perhaps given the amount of injuries and the fact that the majority of the top 16 are over 30 some kind of change could be implemented.

There are a few criteria such as I think time on the ATP tour and number of match wins that allow ( at least the better ) older players to miss some mandatory events without fines or ranking point zeros.

Roger for instance scores on possibly all counts so gets away with quite a few although he does have some mandatory zeros, not that he personally has played anything like enough that they replace other points that would otherwise have counted

Not sure if anyone has offhand the current rules on this or link to them.

600 matches, 12 years of service or over 30. Meet all three and get complete exemption form Masters 1000 events. I would give the link, but am reading from a downloaded copy
