Weeks 27 & 28 - Wimbledon (grass) - men's singles

Agree with all these posts.
So proud of Andy whatever happened today.
He did far better in the Championships than many had hoped given the state of his hip before hand.
Hope he gets good advice and takes the necessary time to recover.
It was reassuring to hear him say in his press that playing today wouldn't have made his hip any worse.

Djokovic retires 7-6(2) 2-0 down to Berdych.

That's 3 of the 'big 4' out. C'mon, Milos !

For what it's worth Andy is now guaranteed to remain WR 1 post Wimbledon. Now still take a good rest !

What a strange day with two of the big four injured. I wonder whether we are going to see a change in playing patterns 'a la' Roger. I think realistically if we want to see our stars perform into their thirties the ATP is going to have to allow it.
Unfortunately I think he's going to win it now . Go Jo is my main sentiment left for this tournament.

 "Unfortunately" me ribs.

Glorious victories for tennis recently with Nadal (the GCOAT to Federer's GOAT) and to a lesser extent Djokovic departing the tournament.

Murray and Djokovic both losing injured explains a hell of lot about this season, to be honest. The quality at the top has been at its lowest for... well since Federer dominated, with the undisputed top two both struggling with injuries.

It's a shame Federer has really been gifted yet another grand slam. Would love to see Berdych beat him on Friday but can't see it. Cilic maybe.

It's been such a frustrating year for Murray. Hope he can take a break now and come back fully fit and firing later in the year. This season has been a difficult one to watch.

Happy that Sam could knock Andy out tbh. Think Fabio might've done it earlier had he not rolled his own ankle/been less hot and cold as a player.

Happy because I think retiring or not playing Wimbledon wasn't something Andy wanted at all to the point where he was playing when clearly he shouldn't be. I do hope he has a proper rest (& Novak too) and doesn't vulture for points to try and qualify for London like he did the year post back surgery - that said, is that even possible given his million points to defend after the USO.

In the live race Andy is 8th so currently just in a tour finals position ( independent of points defences ). He could be overtaken this week by Berdych ( if he reaches the final and / or Querrey if he wins the whole shebang). Though with Fed about he probably won't be.

But yes I wouldn't be putting any priority on staying in a tour finals position against getting himself fit and well.

His immediate post match talk was that the US Open is still 6 weeks away so quite a lot of time yet before that, which shows where his thoughts still were. But let's see after talks with his team and medics

I'll second that!  not Roger the Lodger, Berd-brain or Querrey.

There's a minor issue for Milos now though

Ah, yes, was getting a bit carried away there...   C'mon, Marin!    Wish it'd been Gilles, though.

I've always liked Sam Q but, did I miss it, was it later maybe, because when I heard his immediate post-match interview he made no mention that Andy was in any way diminished.
Now, I know that nearly all players play with aches and pains, and that some exaggerate, and that maybe you're not at your most lucid straight after a 5 hour match.
But I found it very ungracious not to make a reference to it - like those who scrape past a lowly ranked player and then give no credit to that player, just talk about how poor they were playing (Kiki Mlad did a spectacular job at that at RG - quite awful).
Anyway, sorry Sam, but I thought it was poor.

I noticed that too, and I admit it grated on me at the time. I was waiting to some acknowledgement that Andy hadn't been at his best due to injury, and the fact that he'd carried on in spite of it knowing he was on the end of bakery products. (More than Nole did).

I didn't find this a classy interview from Sam, shame.

According to this morning's Metro:

Querrey admitted that he knew Murray was struggling, adding:  "I sort of noticed it from the beginning, but just stayed with my game.  I just tried to play aggressive, just kept my foot down and tried to pound the ball".

That was presumably said at his official post-match press conference.
Andy, on the other hand, has apparently won Roger the Lodger's respect for seeing out the match:

Federer said Murray had gained his respect for trying to defend his Wimbledon title despite probably aware that his injury could render him incapable of doing so.

Andy, I hope by playing he didnt make things worse, explained the favourite to lift this years title. Yeah, its big for him to step out on court and give it a go, even though maybe knowing, like me last year, that chances are slim he was going to defend this title.

He continued: I have a lot of respect for him doing that. I just hope that he comes out on the other side now not having to miss much later on.

I just hope he can recover quickly and get ready for America really, or Canada for that matter.

Thanks SC. That sort of makes it worse really, re Sam.

But never mind, it's hardly a hanging offence.
