Weeks 27 & 28 - Wimbledon (grass) - men's singles

Kyle didn't do at all badly yesterday, he continues on his year on year incremental improvement. Monfils is a class act and for a man on his first outing on centre court Kyle was in no way outclassed.

Grass is Kyles worst surface and he is beginning to put together a fairly effective game on it, I was positively encouraged there is the potential for big strides in the rankings by becoming more consistent alone. His backhand is developing into a weapon, his serve more than solid and you can add to that the potential for significant improvement in his touch game around the net which will improve his game on grass substantially. The one thing about Kyle is you know he will be working on it and I feel he will definitely be in and around the top 10 by 26!

Kyle has significantly improved his results in all slams this year not having to worry about qualifying gives him time to work on building on specific areas of his game. Getting into the top 32 will also help smooth out his draw, he has the weapons to beat lesser players quickly in the early rounds he just needs the game graft and tactical awareness that come through experience. To facilitate growth he needs a complete change in the structure of his coaching team and a bit more investment very much in the way Andy built his, his rank and potential now justify that.

Sorry I just done understand some of the broad generalisations "he's not a top 20 player" when he reached the top 50 before he turned 22 with another 3 and a half years before he comes close to his peak, given his developmental gradient and the altitude at which he now functions it just shows a lack of understanding of basic maths (I think the syllabus is very weak in Norway) as his development changes from a linear quadratic equation into the complexities of a curve!

He is not a man without talent, he is a man who will respect it, nurture it and if he stays fit really enjoy playing at the elite level for close to a decade.

Ah that players followed or continued to follow mathemical curves everything would be more settled. Though let's maybe be thankful that players are a collection of many different complex individuals and don't and that makes it much more interesting and leaves room for legitimate differences in thoughts as to where they are heading.

Yes, Kyle's year to year progression in the rankings has been impressively consistent so he is an individual that would look probably more likely to continue on that path. But there is little guarantee at all of that and more than half way through the year his race position is in the 70s and he may drop back this year or may push through later in the year. That in itself is not a biggee for let's not make this so much about maths ( well other than Vandenburg's rather illogical top 50 peak thoughts ).

It is about individuals and I have some concerns about Kyle as an individual. It's that presence thing and confidence thing again, sorry to repeat. More walk the walk and in the big points he might feel he really is the man in the here and now to seize the moment or even the opponent may be more concerned that he is ready to. That will take time, but high time there was some evidence of change. In the last few days there seem to be many pundits jumping on a bandwagon and I hear stuff like "man up". Still I think in general rather a lot of truth in comments I have heard on his ( lack of ) presence and many folk that want him to do well do see his demeanour as an issue that has a tennis effect. Rather anyway than continue with 'nothing to see here'.

And yes Kyle indeed didn't do at all badly yesterday. At times he looked very good and came out the traps better than I feared he might to hit really positively.

But to me there are many doubts as to where he will get to. But issues both technical and otherwise well addressed over time and he could be going to a very good place and I may have my real doubts about top 10 but I most certainly don't discount even that. It would be great to see him really develop on the very clear assets that he does have and go very high in the game.

The lad is 22. We haven't the foggiest where he'll end up - but he's done brilliantly to get where he is. And he, rightly, is of the view that at 22, he has a long way to go. We're all agreed on that. So we'll see.

The only thing that struck me was when he was playing Alex Ward. Whenever he missed a shot he should have made - on a service return, for example - there was an anguished expression and occasionally a face palm. I noticed it at the point where he was something like 4-0 up in the third: whatever shot he'd missed, it was hardly likely to mean the loss of the match. But I suspect two things: one, as others have mentioned, that Wimbledon puts heavy pressure on him. And two that while he shows little emotion, he's probably fairly hard on himself. A little more ease with himself may come with time, but might be something that his team could help with also.

But I thought he did really well against Monfils. It wasn't the kind of match-up designed to favour him ... I suspect Mr Edmund at this point is better against power than against inventiveness and athleticism ... and Monfils (another of my favourites to watch) combines all three and is tough for anyone.

A few years ago a lot of people (even on this board) were writing off Jo Konta. For me, I'm content to admire his talent and work ethic, wish him well, and see what happens.

Watching the Bedene match Ronald McIntosh must be the most dire tennis commentator ever

Seconded.

Don't know where Mike Costello was but Mr McIntosh did the 5 Live commentary on the Joshua vs Klitschko fight. Nooo ...  no

I think his Wimbledon TV debut was the famous Isner vs Mahut marathon. The only commentator that could have actually made that match seem longer than it was.

Müller on grass one of the toughest possible draws outside the top 5 + Cilic.

As expected, Murray in a bit of a tussle with Fognini. The Italian has just levelled at one set apiece.

Murray storms through the third however, taking it 6-1 as Fognini takes an MTO for his foot/ankle.

Not been watching, but I hadn't sensed any general expectation of a big tustle here at Wimbledon. I must admit I anticipated a straight sets win for Andy.

Anyway I see the third set secured 6-1 though also that Fognini has taken a MTO.

I was speaking for myself, mainly.

Fognini now a break up in the fourth. A decider looks imminent.

This match is getting more nervy by the second. Murray not looking happy. Really needs to regroup now.

Amazing comeback from Murray, who comes from *2-5 down down, saving set points across three different games as he came back to take it 7-5. Great win. And certainly a tussle.

Well, his form may have been called into doubt a few times this year, but you can't question his heart and his mental toughness. What a way to finish.
