Got to say, Fognini was the match that immediately caught my eye when the draw came out as to the most obvious early stage threat. Not particularly optimistic about that one given Murray's form this season. He's beaten Murray on the big stage a few times already in the last couple of years.

But never on grass.  Sure, the head-to-head is 3:3, but two of Foggy's wins were on clay (the DC QF on that appalling court in Naples three years ago & the last 32 of the Rome Masters this year, when Andy was far from his best) & the first ever was in the Canadian Masters on hard ten years ago!

 Should be Ok on grass, well that's what I'm hoping !

I do like to watch Foggy play and it is amazing to think he was born 2 days after Djokovic and 9 days after Andy in 1987, the May 87 vintage is a particularly fine one. The Willbomb debate about talent over graft comes to mind here, in terms of natural talent Fabio may be the most talented of the three but has never seemed to have the application or mental attitude to make it to the very top.

Question - How do you pronounce Aljaz Bedene - I've heard at least 4 different versions today?

Hmm I think I know how to say it - but how to type it so it sounds right??....

Al-ee-ash  Bed-a-nay

Might be completely wrong of course!! Happy to be corrected.

Think that pretty much nailed it, some variation between Al-ee-ash and Ally-ash depending on who is talking but as Ali is his nickname I would think the former seems more phonetically correct.

Loved the way that the umpire in the Karlovic match said "Game Bed-a-nay" on 30 occasions and there were still people in the crowd shouting "Come on BeDEAN". Don't these people listen ?

I see that Janowicz beat Pouille and Paire beat Herbert ( Kyrgios's R1 retirement conqueror ). So either way a kind of interesting non seeded opponent awaits Andy in the L16 if he gets past Fognini, which I would be very optimistic about on grass, especially how Andy has started here.

The three countries with so far more than a total of 2 singles players ( men plus women ) through to R3 ( or guaranteed through, checking any same country remaining match-ups in R2 ) :

1=. GBR 4
1=. USA 4
3. FRA 3

I find Forvo is the best guide to the pronunciation of foreign names.  This one is by a male from Slovenia & the "z" at the end of his first name, which bears a diacritic, makes it sound like al-JAR (stress on the second syllable) be-de-ne (no syllable stressed) ...

 Hello, I'm new :) pleased about all the Brit wins today.

Hilariously, Andy also says how to pronounces his name on his ATP profile - am not sure there's a more straight forward name around to say!?

Welcome, flamingowings.

A word of warning:  never, ever, believe the pronunciations suggested by the ATP.  The site's run by pig-ignorant, monolingual Yanks who haven't a bloody clue & as far as I can see, the page to which you've posted a link doesn't actually offer one!  confuse

Indeed, the R4 and QF could both be quite open in terms of who actually makes it through to meet the Murray/Fognini victor. Janowicz looked ominously good in the bits I saw of the 1st round: that's two good matches in a row - and Janowicz has had good runs here before. But which Benoit Paire will turn up - uninspired? Or unplayable? On the other side, Tsonga, Querrey, and Anderson would certainly all have a shot at the QF. Little less convinced on Bemelmans - but you never know.

Also struck by tomorrow's scheduling. Were I going to Wimbledon, from a men's tennis perspective, I'd go for courts 3 (del Potro/Gulbis and Tiafoe/Zverev) and 12 (Harrison/Berdych) and (barring Mr Edmund's match) steer clear of the expensive courts.

 Yes it does. Under his name click the loudspeaker icon.

Ah, hadn't noticed that.   I was thinking more of the risible suggested pronunciations that come up sometimes when you click on a player's name on the ATP live scoreboard to bring up his profile.  By the way, I make my comments as a former professional linguist (admittedly, western European languages with only a passing knowledge of some others), so with some insight.

 Oh god, not Janowicz ahead.

Those are both nasty floaters, but then by round 4 it could be far worse. Really the next two rounds both depend entirely on what sort of form Andy is in.
