Wimbledon Ladies Qualifying

It's days like today I ask why do our girls keep losing 3 set epics? Always when they break they will be guaranteed to start serving like ****. How with so much investment do we produce so few good players. And some of our girls are genuinely talented.

I don't think they do particularly lose more than their fair share of close matches generally when playing much more against their own level.

At Wimbledon qualies yes, and I thought I put some pretty rational thoughts as to why, though yes would look to get one or two go their way sometime.

To earlier comments that's not just saying aww, so close, what a shame etc but looking at some reasons why. I reckon much more a less higher level experience / big underdog syndrome than some British syndrome.

It could so easily have been a humdinger of a day.....Harriet with two match points, Maia serving for the match twice, and Eden with more first set set points that you can shake a stick at.

But in the end only Katy got over the line.

However, she should be really proud of herself. It was a hard match. And she played a poor game when serving for the match the first time. Her serve had got better (in my view) but it's still a comparatively weak point of her game. But she played really tough tennis to break back. And then played a super game to close it out, which is never easy (just ask the others.....)

Maia's was similar in a way. The first time she served for the match, it was a poor service game, no question. But the second time, she played a cracking game, strong first serves, one of her best games. But her opponent got some excellent (slightly flukey?) returns, and a couple of stellar winners, there was nothing Maia could have done better in the second attempt. And I think, having done that but still lost, the belief slipped a little. Which is not surprising. But she put some excellent tennis out there, such a shame that it wasn't quite enough.

Didn't see Gabi (over in a flash). And Freya looks in a bad place. Rather slow. And deliberate. No zing.

First time I've seen Eden. And she has really elegant shots. Lovely shape. Needs a bit more power (which she has no reason not to add as she has the technique and has clearly been in the gym). Should certainly have won the first set (had at least three set points that she should have won, including one pretty easy backhand volley that she prepared for ALL wrong). She'll be a bit disappointed, but it was a very good showing for somebody with zero experience, really, at high end tennis. I hope she continues to make the same progress.

Great performance by Maia must give her confidence for the future. However how many times do our girls lose close three setters in Wimbledon qualies ie Harriet(twice) Freya now Maia Is Karen Cross still the last lady to qualify over 20 years ago

Karen is still last British woman to qualify for Wimbledon, yes, but as well as doing it 20 years ago, when she went on to reach R3, she also managed it 4 years later, in 2001, when she made it to R2.

When most of the GB women who would be in qualies by right are given MDWCs and almost all of the GB women in qualies are QWCs, it stands to reason that few of them are going to make it through three rounds. This is even more true given propensity to give younger women QWCs over more experienced players.

And thanks, CD, for the report.

And I think that's the way it should be if you are going to have wildcards, no wildcards and we would have had many more qualifiers over the years. Jo Konta (all but the last two yrs) Heather, Naomi and Laura would have all featured regularly over the last 6-7 years and only Tara would have played this year of those presently playing. Bit of a nonsense discussion moaning about the present cohorts performance when quite clearly the focus is on development which is reasonable upto 24.

I thought someone like Sam or Anne did. I seem to remember an interview with the person who was the only one or our batch (the rest had MDWCs) to get to round 2.

Looking back ten years to Wimbledon 2007 only two of our seven entries in the qualifying tournament , Fitzpatrick and Borwell, got through to lose in Q2. Baltacha, Keothavong, Cavaday, and South all lost in R1 of the main draw with only O'Brien getting through to lose in R2. At a time when we had had no players in the top 100 for many years there was always criticism of the same players getting wild cards to Wimbledon year after year. It did however help fund them for a few more years and eventually several of them did break into the top 100.

Poor start by Katy, but from 0-3 she has compete really well, and was unlucky not to recover the break earlier.
But now it is *4-5 and a close match

I've actually been really impressed by Katy here. Done herself justice at the very least!
