And therefore plays a QF against the top seed, Kai Chen Chang (112/105 current rankings, CHs 82 and 65). The latter has finally lost a game (or 5 to be precise) in her 4th round, having swept through the first three without losing one.

In the doubles QF Ms Arbuthnott and Ms Nicholls play Ms Ip (again) and Eudice Wong Chong.

World University Games

Three British girls are taking part in the World University Games in Taipei City. Emma Hurst reached the 4th round but lost to one of a very strong contingent of home players. Emily Arbuthnot (seeded 11) has done very well to reach the singles quarter finals. Emily is partnering Olivia Nicholls in the doubles. As 6th seeds they have already reached their appointed position in the draw and play tomorrow in what is hopefully a winnable match against a pair from Hong Kong. Top seeds in this event are none other than Top 10 world ranked players-the Chan sisters. Olivia partnered by Luke Johnson are also seeded 6 in the mixed and play their last 16 match tomorrow. There's a large thread about this already, telstar.

It's in the General tennis section because it has both men and women competing.

Moved Telstar's post. Emily's next opponent, Chang, is the defending champion, who has been quite ruthless in her defence so far. That QF will be played on Sunday.

Emily Arb and Olivia won their doubles QF and through to the semis.

Same for Luke Johnson and Jack F-H.

Luke and Olivia are currently 2-0 up in the mixed doubles match.

The womens live draw is a total FU - players seem to be randomly entered into the QF slots ! Fortunately the pdf links are up to date.

So that's the two doubles pairings in contention for a medal - well done to them! The men's doubles win is particularly impressive as it was over the top seeds, a team with a current combined doubles ranking of 226.
In the next round - happily illustrated with a medal on the schedule:

Ms Arbuthnott and Ms Nicholls face the 2nd seeds, a Thai pairing: Varatchaya Wongteanchai and Varunya Wongteanchai. They are indeed, as one might suspect, sisters. And they are a force to be reckoned with. The elder has a current WTA doubles ranking of 115, a CH of 77, 2 WTA doubles titles and 29 ITF doubles titles. The younger isn't quite so accomplished (current WTA doubles ranking of 640, CH 216, 11 ITF titles). But nonetheless, they're quite impressive.
Mr Findel-Hawkins and Mr Johnson face the 5th seeds from Japan, Shintaro Imai and Kaito Uesugi. Shintaro Imai has a current ATP doubles ranking of 285 and CH of 268; Uesugi is weaker at 839/662.

Good luck to all.

Doesn't matter. It's great that lots of people are interested in the Games and tennis outside of the US Open smile

No need to apologise, I realise it's easy to miss threads if you come in via one of the sub-forums rather than the recent posts list, and it was perfectly reasonable to start a thread on this if you thought it wasn't already being covered.

One set gone and Emily has won more games than Chang's previous opponents put together - yes, she has actually won the 1st set, 6-4

Chang hits back with an early break in the 2nd set - 6-4 2-3*. Chang has actually had 7 break points in each set, and in each set Emily has saved 6 of those 7, while she had 5 bp chances herself in the 1st set and took 2 of them.

Rain delay, I think - apparently it's 36C 'feels like 40C' and that's something Chang should be more used to than Emily. Must be like it was where I am a couple of weeks ago and I wouldn't like to have tried to run around in that!

Posting about the rain delay seems to have coincided with play starting again ...

They're playing in front of several thousand people apparently - twitter.com/TennisFndation/status/901643493692424192/photo/1 (on an earlier photo, you could see the spectators and while it wasn't full, there were plenty of people and it's a big stadium)
