Week 26 - ATP 250 - Aegon International, Devonshire Park, Eastbourne (grass)

I don't think the question was one of free speech but more a case of why keep visiting a message board related to British Tennis when you seem to dislike every British player on the tour. Kind of like a vegetarian visiting a message board dedicated to Kentucky Fried Chicken, well within your rights but seemingly pointless and self defeating.

This is a mad comparison.  Eating veg food or not is a choice.  I do not like the current government,  but yet I go on political blogs to share my views?? is that not ok? The point is we are stuck with the current government, like we are stuck with this current group of British players.  And, like the government, it is is the national interest, as the LTA is tax payer funded to analyse them and look for faults.

I give praise where it is due, but sometimes (most of the time) the overhype on this site, is like there is 100 Andrew Castles.

Many people in the clouds on this site, mistake trolling for reality.  Last year we had a thread, where I was very critical of generation fail (Willis, Rice, Cox etc), and was critical about the fact we were still even reporting on them. This thread drew in praise from many corners of this site.  The fact is the British tennis has been the laughing stock of the tennis world for the last 30 years (the reasons for British tennis failure are multifaceted). And yes, you should say I should take my anger out on the system not individuals, but I believe it is a combination of both.  If Rice and Cox were in war torn eastern europe living in poverty and tennis was all they had, they would have made the top 100.

Hey vandenburg

That's rubbish mate. I can tell you that Marcus will bomb bloke is deffo gonna reach top 20 in world. I mean I saw him beat some players last year and almost beat federer so he must be the next big thing. And isn't that Dan Evans a great player. Can see him getting top 10 this year.

With Noel Edmund as well we are almost certain to retain Davis cup as well surely?

My take on that too, I've always thought it was just attention seeking, like a naughty child. Bad attention is better than no attention.

I've thrown the odd controversial topic around ( I can count them on one hand)  on this board over many many years of being a member of this Forum. I think there are several topics that will always get a heated debate going. To be honest I didn't like how I was made to feel about those reply posts by other members and have avoided being part of similar discussions ever since.  I think I'm like most here, who are here for the right reasons. To support, discuss, share views and observations. I think it's okay to have differing opinions but some members on here are only on here to provoke and stir reactions. I'm with Helen and have to question the real agenda of a handful of members. There are several definitions of being a troll, most are correct

Vandenburg, taking you seriously, which you may not intend, if you are concerned about the percentage of your taxes that goes on the LTA and the use they make of it, may I suggest that you contact your MP? My guess is that since 2016 government funding of the LTA was about £3.5 million, meaning that any individual's contribution is likely to be on the order of between 5p and £1, I doubt it will be the highest priority. But you do indeed have, as a taxpayer, the right to have your say.

In terms of this board, there are many lively debates and many people with strong opinions. But there's generally a sense that we wish people well - not in a sycophantic or uncritical way, but as people who respect what the athletes are doing and want to support those who play for GB. That's an entirely reasonable thing for a GB Tennis board to do!

Beyond that, though, one really crucial thing. Have opinions as much as you want. But doing things like calling a group of people "Generation Fail" is neither accurate - I would be extremely pleased, were I a tennis player, to have achieved as much as Dan Cox, for example - nor appropriate. You, like most of us, have chosen a pseudonym for your posts: we post from anonymity. The tennis players about whom we post are not simply fellow inhabitants of an online world. They're real people with real ambitions and hopes and hard work. They're out there as themselves. And they're very visible. Of course, we can and do critique. But we really can't use mocking generalities or make snide remarks without coming across as the kind of people we really don't want to be. I am sure, for all your posturing, you don't really want to be that kind of person.

Well done Cam, always great to watch someone get their first tour win.

Stu Fraser's report on yesterday's matches in today's Times includes a sidebar (not sure that that's quite the right term) headed "Who is Cameron Norrie?".  Inevitably, it includes mainly biographical detail starting with "Born in South Africa, brought up in New Zealand.  Represented the latter until moving to London at 16 to train at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton."  The next bit made me smile:  "I class myself as a Brit.  Both my parents are British.  I'm happy to play for them.  My Dad is fully Scottish with a filthy Scottish accent [Lord alone knows what that's supposed to mean!]  I feel British."

In the main report, his first round victory over Zeballos is described as "the upset of day", even though Hev had caused one of her own by beating the fourth seed, defending champion & world N° 9, Dominika Cibulkova, in straight sets!  wink

Norrie, brought up by his Scottish father and Welsh mother, is beginning to make his mark. He is not well known outside the inner circles of British tennis - in which he is highly regarded as a future prospect - after spending the past few years as a college player in America.

Needless to say, he's looking forward to  playing Monfils!

Vandenburg, which of the above few reactions to Cams first tour win do you regard as a board "meltdown" anyway? They seem standard congratulations on a first win to me???

I guess this has been almost forgotten due to all the rain, but Cam lost 3&2 today against Monfils.

Saw Cam play at Nottingham the other week on the centre court there and was impressed with his attitude and approach. He seems a well rounded young man with a good game. Didn't expect him to beat Monfils but again on a bigger stage he handled things well. I think both he and Jay are very much the next two to make the top 100.
