It probably sounds strange but is it some sort of middle class (as most tennis fans are) post Brexit vote "show how European we are" reaction (as many middle class folks probably voted remain) ? Just wondering? 2 and 2 equals....5?
Hehe, I voted remain but would still support the GB players - besides many of them have multi-nationality backgrounds anyway!!!
One thing I think would help a little is to put a players nationality on the scoreboard. They didn't do it on the outside courts at Nottingham and they don't do it at Wimbledon either. Always has annoyed me. Overheard conversations at Nottingham with people thinking the Skupskis were from Poland and Brydan from Belgium(!).
But it's good to see that Gabi is trying to battle back again in the second set. 2 breaks to 1 in her favour at the moment, with the pendulum swinging more evenly this set...
The analysis of their match is very interesting actually, since it is very obvious where Gabi lost it. On overall points the score is 91-92 to Rybarikova, but the serving stats! In terms of aces and DFs, Rybarikova is 9-0 whilst Gavi is 1-13!!!! Now interestingly, once you take out the DFs, Gabi's second serve win percentage was far higher than Rybarikova's. In fact it was 16/26 = 61.5%
Rybarikova is currently WR107 and she is going to go back higher again. For Gabi to be so competitive against her is highly encouraging. Now just to improve that first serve snap and reduce the DFs.
