Any news of how he's doing and whether he's back training?
Little snippet from Bouncy's USO diary in today's Metro:
Delighted to see Kyle Edmund, Britain's former Australian Open semi-finalist, at lunch the other day. He's had enough of watching others play after serious knee issue and hopes to be on the match court by the end of the year.
Any news about Kyle? I thought I had read that he was hoping to be back on court in October but there doesn't seem to be any sign of this yet.
Advertised as being part of the exhibition in Scotland on December 21st and 22nd. England v Scotland involving both Murrays, Kyle, Dan Evans, Cam Norrie, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.
So despite spending the whole year out injured, Kyle only dropped 1 place in the GB rankings. As a result all of his counting tournaments come from 2019 and 2020. His win in New York in Feb 2020 contributes 42% of his total, the most any single tournament contributes to any of the Top 10 players point total, meaning he is the person who inadvertently has most of his eggs in one basket. The other consequence of his inactivity is that of the points he currently has, 66% is scheduled to drop by the end of Q1 2022. So without the protected ranking process, he would be the person who needs to get off to a flyer in 2022.
No new news on Kyle but I noticed that he posted on his Instagram on the 7th Feb that he spent a week training at St Georges Park the FA/England training centre. Assuming that he is just doing physical training at the moment and no tennis training then he might still be a few months off getting back on court.
A shame that he wont be playing the grass season, as being able to use WCs rather than the PR would have been an advantage for future tournaments. I thought it had gone a bit quiet on his Instagram with training clips. Doesnt sound like this will keep him off the training court for too long though.
This feels very Delpo like, an ongoing injury - I hope it doesnt become career ending
I think it will be career ending. The question is - when? Delpo did manage to come back a few times and extend his career but will that happen to Kyle? I just don't feel optimistic and never have about Kyle's comeback chances.
Hopefully fit enough to get back to playing singles, if not maybe a career in doubles? There have been a few players who have become doubles experts because they are unable to stay healthy enough for singles.
During commentary on Cams match earlier, it was said that there are some rumours floating around that Kyle might be playing Mixed Dubs at Wimbledon. That might be a nice way to start the recovery back to full fitness.
