Pity for Sam, but Katie is up at WR 252 going into this week, good on grass and been in general pretty good form. So while of course Sam would have wanted the win the week looks very decent progress on her way back.

Emily Appleton has made a good start, but is currently down in the second set although she has just broken back to be on serve again, 6-3 *3-4

Will be interested to know how she and Gaby have been playing from anyone that has managed to see them...

Very pleased for Naomi, more so even than usual, and hope she has a very good week with all that this tournament has come to mean for her this year.

Was able to be there for 2 1/2 hours only today and that's probably it for the week. Saw the second half of the final set of Katie Boulter and Sam . First time I've seen KB -she did well in the games I saw and was just slightly better in them. I then watched Naomi and Raina-thought Naomi was comfortable and competent without being totally convincing. Her opponent played a lot of decent shots and winners but was very vulnerable to low balls landing just in front of her which she frequently netted. Her inconsistency cost her at the important moments,which Naomi backed up by her big serve,capitalised on.

Gaby Taylor made a horrendous start and was soon two breaks of serve and 3-0 down. But a few very good winners later and a drop in her opponent's good start,she was 4-3 up and looking good,at which stage I unfortunately had to go. But obviously that carried on with her straight sets win.Well done to her and all the other Brits[including Sam and Emily A ]

Jeremy Bates was sat down at the far end of the Centre Court in summer shorts and sunglasses in Naomi's match.He was off like a shot as soon as it finished-didn't see him watching any of the other games

Ah good effort, pity she couldn't get it won in the second set TB.

Four through to the L16 and Katie B and Gabi will be close to their CHs of 243 and 296 respectively. Further wins would ensure new CHs.

Also looks like we will now have 9 in the top 300 at the same time, close to the 10 that's been mentioned off and on for some time. And I'm pretty sure it would be 10 if poor Mandy hadn't got injured.

Yes. There's certainly a very interesting bit of bunching going on. A real group of them now between 250 and 300. With Katie Swan, and Freya, also very able to get (back) into the group too. And all of a similar age.

Of course, in the short term, the Wimbly quali draw will be very important.

Katy D and Freya lost in the first round last year.

But Katie B and Gabi have 20 points from getting through to QR2.

And Harriet, of course, has 30 from making the FQR.

It's the biggest or second biggest counter for each of them.

(and Katie Swan has 10 from her first round main draw loss).

Lots could happen before then, though....
