Considering she was in on a WC, Laura got a good 1st round draw, avoiding the seeds. In fact she definitely got the softest draw of all those who were gifted wildcards. But a handful of grass matches aren't going to fix what is broken. And they didn't last year.
The best thing for her situation would have been to ask for QWC's to these types of grass events. The fact that she doesn't is her personality and one of the paths to rebuilding herself as a tennis player that's not being taken.
There was some good tennis in this match though. And I thought Laura did hold it together and really fight at times. More mental control than I've seen sometimes from her. Promising actually. Just my opinion.
Didn't see any of the match but let's not forget Boserup is currently at a CH of 85 so seemingly on the way up. Laura does seem to be knocking on the door, would just be nice to see her get some sort of breakthrough at Tour level.
I do think she deserves credit for having stuck at it in the ITFs. There were those, including myself, who had their doubts that she would. It can't have been easy given the heights she was enjoying a few years previously.
I must admit I agree with the QWC for this grass season. She said herself last year that when she was using WCs and PR she felt under more pressure and played worse, so learn from your mistakes and don't put yourself under so much pressure. If she's good enough at this point she'll get through qualies anyway and get more confidence.
Laura has only had one (qualifying) wildcard since Wimbledon last year, every other event she has played on merit based on her ranking. Therefore I think it's fair enough she plays one or two higher level events in the grass court season (mixed in with ITFs and qualifying). Boserup was a decent draw for Laura though, and I'm sure she will be disappointed because she wasn't outplayed, but had her chances and didn't take them.
Please don't get me wrong. I don't begrudge her her WCs. I just don't think that it's her best way to keep the confidence and form she got on the Asian swing.
She's said that WCs put pressure on her, so why take them knowing that you're going to under perform, especially when you've been doing so well without them. (OK argument for being on grass and on your home turf).
Saying that I would make an exception for Wimby. Who wouldn't want to play their favorite tournament by any means.
R1: Johanna Konta & Yanina Wickmayer (BEL) CR 237 (114+123) vs Chuang Chia-jung & Renata Voracova (TPE/CZE) CR 119 (64+55)
R1: (4) Christina McHale (USA) & Heather Watson CR 118 (44+74) vs Mona Barthel & Anastasija Sevastova (GER/LAT) CR 784 (601+183), Barthel has a 2015 CH 63
R1: (WC) Freya Christie & Tara Moore CR 682 (382+300) vs Jocelyn Rae & Laura Robson CR 401 (124+277)
The all-GB clash is scheduled for Court 1 later this afternoon, though there clearly may be a doubt about Tara.
You're probably right. That match may not take place. Poor Tara. So glad I didn't make the journey to Notts today with an abbreviated match for Jo and probably no Laura/Jos doubles - would have been a thin day for my personal interest.
From WTA match report: "... Moore delivered 10 double faults, many at crucial stages. Visibly struggling with a leg injury, the 24-year-old called a medical time-out after falling behind a double break in the second set, and conceded the match shortly afterwards."
It was, apparently, Johanna's 300th career singles win, too.
