While I recognise many like the more variety of not having all GB matches, often they are good tennis draws, particularly such as in loaded grass court draws where they come in as some of the lowest ranked, often on WCs with not good odds for them elsewhere in the draw.
Katy vs Gabi is a great tennis draw chance for each for R2 in a 100K with 13 ranking points straight off to the winner. Then potentially Vekic in R2 may not look great but a non seed is going to be bracketed against some seed in one of the first two rounds.
I agree with you on this point - Katy v Gabi is a great draw for both in particular. Naomi v Tara is an OK draw for both too, whilst they are both good grass court players, neither is on great form and at least one will start the grass season off on a positive note.
Aside from the all GB clashes, a pretty good draw with the top seeds avoided. I doubt Laura's match will be as exciting as her previous one against Marina Erakovic at Wimbledon 2013.
Watched Katie's match today. She didn't look very happy all match and was shaking out her right arm quite often. Lao is very slight and much less powerful than Katie but she loves to slice making it quite awkward with very low pick-ups. Katie was over hitting a lot in the first set and her service was very variable. Some time after her match finished, I passed her sitting on a bench chatting it over with Heather. I'm sure she was very frustrated but it was lovely to see a fellow professional supporting her.
Thanks for the first-hand reports, Goldfish. Glad you had a good time there!
Ditto. Thanks, goldfish.
Shame (in my view) that this event went from a 50k to a 100k. I went every day last year (bar two). Excellent event. Don't think I can this year - and lack of GB players doesn't help (nor weather, though that's not their fault).
Interestingly we have here in R1 GB ranks #2 to #9 and there are likely to initially be 8 Wimbledon WCs spread between MD and Qualifying*.
I don't think it will be precisely these 8 though since I expect Katie Swan to get one.
The grass season starts here and possibly for one or two the time to be making the case for not having to go to the Q WC play-offs. Most already clearly will not.
*As has been mentioned if this AELTC policy is again in force this year it surely doesn't need rigidly adhered to, but if it is ...
