week 23 - ITF ($100K) - Surbiton, UK Grass

Managed to get down to Surbiton for a large chunk of today:

British Player of the Day: Harriet

I think I may be her good luck charm (wouldn't that be nice ) as whenever I see her play, she plays really, really well. She must have lousy matches too, or she wouldn't be ranked where she is, but I've never seen them....

Her opponent was that 'classic' Spanish player (need emoji for tongue in cheek) - she's very tall, huge serve, flat heavy ball and tons of net play. I kid you not - obviously some genetic abnormality somewhere.... And Harriet completely took her on - very aggressive, really hitting through the ball and going for depth and placement. She didn't manage to get to the net much herself (not really possible off the Spaniard's balls( but when she did she was effective. And she kept her head together wonderfully - it was very close but she deserved to win.

Disappointing performance of the day: Tara

I know I vigorously defended her right to a MD Wimbly WC recently, and I've always been a fan, but, frankly, and given her ranking, there was very little of any value that she put out on the court today - she looks a little out of shape, which is probably one of the reasons for the unforced errors, and shouting to your Dad when you get a dodgy line call is just immature - deal with the zillion of points you've thrown away from your own bad play and get over the dodgy call. I know Naomi is not an 'easy' opponent on grass, and maybe that was partly it, but I expected better.

Others:

Hev - started really poorly. K was by far the better player for all the first set (bar the tie-break). Was lucky to get a 'freeby' point (wrong call) when K was serving for the set at 5-4 and leading 15-0. But she hung in well, got a bit better, putting more on the ball and looking less nervous, K played a lousy tie-break, Hev played a decent one, and that was the first set. After which, K sort of lacked the will to fight and Hev capitalised nicely.

Katie B - a decent showing but she was always a little behind and M looked in control. Katie made a match of it, played some decentish tennis, and gave herself a chance. But the result was definitely fair and you never got the feeling that M was going to lose.

Laura - Difficult to say, really. There's a lot to like in her leftie serve and placement she gets in some of her ground shots. But she's like a rabbit in the headlights - there's very little conviction to hit through the ball, to step in - she tries sometimes but I guess it's a confidence thing - she goes back to pushing it and pays the price. And, yes, Korriban wherever you are, movement is definitely a big issue. I felt for her though - you sort of sense that she's close to playing a LOT better - but I doubt that is much consolation.

Naomi - it gives me stomach ulcers watching Naomi, but she has undeniable weapons on a grass court and, given the stomach acid-inducing shots won't change, I obviously just have to go with the flow and wish her well.

The bottom half of the draw has really opened up. Heather is the only seed left in with 2 qualifiers and 2 WCs ( Harriet and Katy). Can any of them take advantage?

Sounds rather good as a prediction anyway, we await the events, and go, Harriet.

Nearly 5, one short.

And no, don't check out the names !

Really pleased for Harriet and thanks for the report :)

I watched a lot of her Thai/Korean match videos, and she was playing really nice tennis - so good to see someone playing a solid, interesting, well-judged game.

Thanks for the report CD.

Interesting to see whether Tara will be able to show her talent on the grass this year.

Great report CD.

That Laura line about "very little conviction to hit through the ball" maybe explains a few things.

At her best Laura was a wonderful striker of the ball and most certainly hit through the ball. At times she had difficulties getting it to land in between these white lines but essentially that was what made her and distinguished her, her ball striking. "Pushing" on any regular basis is not Laura and will never get her back where she was. Again, this seems possibly more in the mind.

I do relate to what watching Naomi does to you. Let's hope though her weapons give her a considerably better grass season than last year.

Great report CD.

I do think with Laura it was a lot to do with self-belief. In the first set she was going for her shots more but as soon as she went behind in the second she just seemed to crumple a bit. It didn't look like she'd given up, more that she didn't trust her ability to win through. Movement was an issue, her opponent soon learnt that if she did a drop shot then Laura wouldnt be able to control her return shot, even when she got there in time. She lost a number of points through that. Her body language also gives hope to her opponent.

Tara really looked out of condition. Not trying to be mean but as a professional sports person it must affect her game and particularly her ability to cover the court.

Heather certainly looked better once she'd gone a set up but that was also down to her opponent's game dropping significantly.

Katie B certainly shows promise and didn't look entirely outclassed  at this level but her opponent looked more battle hardened and in control.

Yes, I completely agree with you, Nix.
Laura definitely didn't give up, as such. But as soon as Erakovic began to play a bit better, Laura very quickly looked a little lost and down and, as you say, like she didn't trust her ability. There was a 'resigned' quality to it. It's a real shame - would rather see her spraying balls, really, at least there's some intent in that. A couple of key coaches I know tell their players that, if things are going wrong, and you find yourself playing tentatively and can't break out, then just mentally write off the next game (choose the game right at the start of the third set, say) and just go and cream the ball - don't really care where it goes, but get your arm to swing again. Equally, rush the net a couple of time, irregardless of the result, just to make yourself be on the front foot and hit the ball in front of you. Laura didn't seem to have any escape plan.

(PS Agree about all the other points too smile)
