And they're out on their respective ears, beaten by Julio Peralta & Horacio Zeballos by 2 & 3!

Which means that if they were to win the tournament, one of two players could (theoretically) move into the #1 or #2 spot (Mahut, Melo) and any of three (PHH/Murray/Soares) could move into the #2 spot. In actuality, PHH would have more points than the current number one if he and Mahut won the tournament - but since they are playing together and Mahut has more points than he does, Mahut would be #1.

A good win from Mr Murray and Mr Soares; I was afraid that Tipsarevic and Troicki would be a banana skin. Pity that Mr Inglot lost (and to his own old doubles partner, yet!) ... and such a close match.

Interesting, Spectator.

Re Jamie & Bruno, for the time being although having the same counting ranking points, Jamie will stay ahead of Bruno based on less tournaments played, Bruno having had the audacity to play 3 additional tournaments with other folk

The no 2 seeds PhH and Mahut have lost the first set to Kyrgios and Thompson 6-7(8)

But have just won the second 6-4 !

Kyrgios the Odious & Thompson have done it, dumping out the second seeds by 7-6(8) 4-6 6-3!

I see the R-G site is persisting in gallicising the name of any male player called "Jordan" as "Jordanie", which is what the French call the country of Jordan!  disbelief  It used to do the same with Jordan Kerr's name.

L32:  (5) Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares (BRA) CR 17 (8+9) vs Mikhail Elgin & Karen Khachanov (RUS)/RUS) CR 324 (68+256)

Khachanov is presumably in on his singles ranking of 53.  Kubot & Melo (4) still there...

Is this where we have one of those 'how dare singles players come and ruin it for doubles players in slams' debates.  Because the very premise that you can object to who enters doubles is hilarious.

Doubles is there for everyone and there is no clear line between the two tours. Lot's of respectable singles players are also good doubles players. Some people who play doubles aren't competetive in singles, so don't enter singles draws. Doesn't mean that doubles tournaments somehow belong to them.

Some of the doubles specialists can be thankful that some potentially very good doubles players don't play it most of the time, due to them focusing on singles.

It's almost like Davis Cup, their ranking reflects how committed they are to routinely playing in events that others are happy to mostly overlook.

I don't believe we were having one of these debates, but might do now

In general I agree and am happy to see well ranked singles players in doubles, certainly in Slams. Probably my one gripe for the doubles specialists is not concerning Slams, but is in 24 pair masters fields that attract a good number of such singles players and very decently ranked doubles players ( sometimes with end of year tour final aspirations ) can't get in, though there I feel it's really a problem of the draw size. Make masters doubles minimum 32 pair fields.

Correct.  I made a point of mentioning Khachanov's singles ranking merely in case anyone questioned his & Elgin's presence in a Grand Slam draw.  For the record, Kyrgios the Odious' & JT's combined DOUBLES ranking is a lowly 183 (76+107), while their singles rankings are 19 & 92 respectively & I didn't bother drawing attention to that fact.

That wasn't an entirely unexpected result. Just as Nick Kyrgios could be a top-10 singles player if he wanted to be, he could be a top doubles player if he wanted to be. So, as with Jack Sock, whenever he enters a partnership with someone reasonably decent (or better), that partnership has the potential to beat any other given pairing. Pity, though. Not because I object to the poaching in this instance, but because I like PHH and Mahut.

In the crowd watching Jamie and Bruno. So far they have been pretty untouchable.

So easy that Bruno asked umpire what the score was on court next to us... it is melo and kubot who are currently down a set
