Could not have asked for a better start to the tournament than Petra on Chatrier, playing beautifully; playing at all.
An antidote to the petty vicissitudes of much of the tennis year to date, and the wider world beyond.
Inspirational stuff.

Down 5-6 in te second. Hsieh throwing a variety of drops, slices and angles, giving Jo a really good test. She plays baseline half-volleys brilliantly, so Jo is having to hit and rehit deep shots which would force errors out of nearly anybody else.

This is what I hate about clay court tennis. There are points where Jo hits 1 or more shots that should be winners but clay is so slow that being the aggressor is almost a disadvantage and it almost favours the person who can just keep pushing it back
