Week 21 - Roland-Garros Qualifying Paris, France Clay

Rallied after the restart, breaking twice for 3-3, befor being broken to trail 0-6, 3-4*

The MTO was for lengthy attention to her left thigh/hip area.

Over and out 0-6, 3-6. Shame. Clearly not at her best. Wouldn't be surprised if she withdraws from the doubles.

The British number 2 after Wimbledon could well be a certain Laura Robson given that Heather, Naomi and Tara are all off form. Who would have thought there was even the slightest chance of that at the start of the year!

Pity - she has been playing better recently
13 Qualifying places in the main draw, so one LL so far - but Heather wouldn't get a place, two of the seeds above her have already gone out today

Grand Slam rules are different, the top 4 losers are randomly sorted, so Heather is 3rd and currently in with a chance unless 2 of Vondrousova, Haddad Maia, Van Uytvanck and Mattek-Sands lose their matches.

I'd forgotten that the rules were different. So yes, still a small chance

Mattek-Sands just won leaving Heather still 3rd in the LL possibles. That leaves three higher ranked seeds to complete their matches.

Haddad Maia has won, and Vondrousova is a set up (6-1)

Van Uytvanck is a break down, but early in the first set .............

Vondrousova has won so I make it that Heather must now end 4th at worst, which puts her into the LL draw.

Good luck, Hev !

Halep, Wozniacki and Doi, that I know of, all have queries over their fitness. So there may be more than 1 LL spot.

Though Heather too looked way short of 100% herself today.

A very big if. Katie B could be GB #2 if she gets a MD WC and reaches the SF...
But, I take the general point.

However, even then, there are some sages amongst us that foresaw something along this line as possible: both christ and nix had Laura R down as year end #2 in the predictions competition.

As things stand re points defences the big favourite to be GB #2 after Wimbledon must be Naomi.

She only has her 10 points from Roland-Garros and Wimbledon due to come off, so without winning another match before the end of Wimbledon ( and assuming a Wimbledon MD WC ) she is guaranteed to be on at least 440 points ie. 448 - ( 10 + 10 ) + ( 2 + 10 ).

Whatever her form, I would have thought that the odds are on Naomi this year winning a grass court match or two to possibly take her up over the 500 point mark. Relatively big mark for anyone else to get near.

So re Laura, I doubt GB #2 after Wimbledon, but I could certainly see her as the end of year GB #2. I could also see her as GB #3, 4, 5 or 6. Hopefully though she is on the up.
